IELTS Writing Task 2 Preparation for Nepali Students

Read the task as a set of decisions. Identify the topic, instruction words, scope, number of questions and the position you must communicate. “Discuss both views and give your opinion,” “to what extent do you agree,” advantages and disadvantages, causes and solutions, and two-part questions create different obligations. Underline qualifiers such as some, all, mainly or in the future. Rewrite the question in plain language before planning so a familiar topic does not pull the essay away from the actual task.

Use a small number of developed ideas. A paragraph needs a clear controlling idea, an explanation of how or why it is true, and relevant support such as a realistic example, consequence or comparison. The official IELTS Writing format states that Task 2 asks candidates to discuss a point of view, argument or problem and may use evidence or examples from experience. Invented statistics and vague claims are weaker than a logically explained example that directly supports the position.

Maintain a clear position from introduction to conclusion. The introduction should frame the question and state the direction without listing memorised sentences. Each body paragraph should advance one part of the response, and the conclusion should synthesise rather than introduce new reasoning. Coherence comes from logical progression, referencing and controlled linking, not from adding a connector to every sentence. Check that pronouns have clear references and that paragraphs are neither one sentence nor a collection of unrelated points.

Improve vocabulary and grammar through precision. Build topic language in collocations and sentence contexts, then choose words that express the intended meaning accurately. Use complex sentences where relationships require them, while protecting subject–verb agreement, tense, articles, punctuation and sentence boundaries. The official Writing band descriptors show that all four criteria matter. A rare word cannot compensate for an incomplete response, weak progression or frequent grammatical error.

Practise in a feedback and transfer cycle. Plan briefly, write a complete essay, preserve the original and receive feedback labelled by criterion. Explain each correction, rewrite strategically and then apply the same improvement to a new prompt. Move from untimed control to approximately 40-minute essays and finally to a full one-hour Writing test that includes Task 1. Reserve a final check for task coverage, position, paragraph purpose, repeated wording, agreement, articles, spelling and sentence boundaries. Track recurring errors across essays instead of chasing one estimated score.
