Build a visual route before the recording starts
Map labelling becomes manageable when the page is treated as a route system rather than a collection of names to memorise.
Know the official task. IELTS Listening includes plan, map and diagram labelling among its question types. The official IELTS map and plan guidance explains two common layouts: numbered locations can appear on the visual with a list of possible answers, or answer letters can appear on the visual with numbered questions below. The layout can reveal how the information is organised, so inspect it before trying to remember every option.
Use the preview time systematically. Read the instruction and title, then find the entrance, “you are here” marker, main gate or other likely starting point. Check for a compass and underline fixed labels such as reception, stairs, road names, river or café. Notice the boundaries and major shapes. If numbered gaps form a visible route, trace that direction lightly. If answer letters are printed on the map, do not assume their alphabetical order matches the recording.
While listening, keep a moving location marker. Follow expressions such as straight ahead, turn left, at the end, opposite, between, just beyond, north of and on the corner. Listen for fixed labels that can relocate you after a missed detail. Official guidance recommends drawing your place on the map or plan while listening. On paper you can mark the question sheet; on a computer, use the pointer and visual landmarks to maintain the same mental tracking process.
Expect the speaker to mention alternatives before confirming the answer. A place may have moved, a proposed site may be rejected or a landmark may be described only to establish direction. Do not select the first option you hear. Track contrast and correction signals such as but, instead, rather than, used to be and now. Also separate the name printed in the answer list from the spatial language around it: official guidance notes that the recording uses the listed location names, so the key challenge is placing them correctly.
Practise with a review map. After one attempt, replay without changing answers and draw the route from the transcript. Mark where you lost position, missed a directional phrase or followed a distractor. The official IELTS Listening sample tasks include plan, map and diagram labelling. Retest on a different visual so that the method transfers beyond one familiar layout.
