One minute useful notes

Convert the cue card into a flexible long-turn route

A successful plan helps you continue when one detail disappears. It should guide the talk without controlling every sentence.

Begin with the official format. In IELTS Speaking Part 2, you receive a task card, have one minute to prepare and speak for one to two minutes. You can make notes, and the examiner may ask one or two brief follow-up questions. The official Speaking sample tasks show a topic followed by prompts and remind candidates that notes are allowed. The bullets support the talk, but the central topic is the main instruction.

Use the first part of the minute to decide what or whom to discuss. Choose an example that you can describe in English, not necessarily the most impressive experience. Official IELTS guidance on using the Part 2 preparation minute recommends checking the topic and selecting a workable example early. If wording is unclear, clarify it at the beginning of the minute rather than waiting until the end.

Build a five-part route: identify the subject, establish the setting, describe a sequence, add two sensory or factual details, and explain significance. Write only keywords, arrows and short prompts. Full sentences consume time and encourage reading or memorisation. A card about an important possession might become “piano → parents/birthday → nine years → practise/relax → family meaning”. The route creates progression while leaving language flexible.

During the long turn, begin directly and make the topic clear. Connect details through time, contrast, cause and personal meaning. If one bullet does not fit naturally, acknowledge it briefly and continue with relevant development. Do not stop to repair every grammar error. Paraphrase when a word is unavailable, and use the route to recover. Aim to speak until the examiner stops you, but do not repeat the same idea only to fill time.

Review cue-card recordings across all four Speaking criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Check whether the route produced logical development, whether pauses came from ideas or language, and whether the listener could follow without effort. Practise the same planning method on a new topic rather than memorising the corrected talk. Variety proves that the strategy transfers to an unfamiliar card.

Start from evidence

Match the class plan to your current score profile, application requirement and realistic test date.

Review the feedback

Useful feedback explains the error, links it to an IELTS criterion and gives a concrete next practice step.

Prepare for delivery

Build language skill and the computer workflow together before a timed official test.

Practical comparison

Use this checklist before paying or booking

Ask the centre for current written information. The table turns general marketing language into verifiable questions.

CheckWhy it mattersWhat to verify
Read the topicThe central instruction controls relevance.Identify the person place object event or experience.
Choose quicklyLong indecision wastes the preparation minute.Use the first workable example you can describe.
Set the sceneContext helps the listener follow.Note who where and when.
Create sequenceA route supports coherent development.Use arrows for beginning change and result.
Add detailSpecific information sustains the long turn.Note two examples senses or facts.
Add meaningReflection extends beyond description.Explain why it matters or what changed.
Use keywordsFull sentences can create a script.Write short prompts only.
RecoverOne missing word should not stop the talk.Paraphrase and return to the route.
Continue naturallyRepetition weakens development.Add reason comparison consequence or example.
RetestA memorised response does not prove flexibility.Use the method on a different card.

Connected support

What makes the MKS IELTS learning system different

Classroom teaching, revision, independent practice and longer support work as one system instead of separate add-ons.

Three learning modes

Choose physical, online or hybrid learning and confirm the current timetable that fits your routine.

Recordings for every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit lessons and catch up on missed work.

iOS and Android access

Continue structured IELTS practice beyond the live class through the MKS digital system.

Physical books

Use organised print materials together with digital practice instead of scattered files.

Six-month access

The eight-week guided course connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing more repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge.

Four-skill system

Keep every section inside the same improvement loop

Attempt, diagnose, correct, repeat and retest. Your overall goal should never hide a required section minimum.

Each skill needs practice, correction and evidence that the same error is less likely to return.

A balanced weekly routine

  • Review Listening distractors, spelling and paraphrase recognition rather than only counting correct answers.
  • Track Reading accuracy by question type and add timed sections only after the method is stable.
  • Use the official Writing criteria to revise task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar.
  • Record Speaking answers and review fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation without memorising scripts.
  • Keep an error log and use the next mock to test whether the correction actually worked.

Before enrolment

  • Confirm Academic or General Training and the required overall and section bands.
  • Ask for the current timetable, fee, inclusions, teacher-feedback process and access period in writing.
  • Test the commute, device, internet and study hours needed for the chosen class mode.
  • Ask how the centre handles missed classes, weak skills and a test date later than the live course.

Before the official test

  • Check the authorised test partner for current dates, locations, fees and delivery options.
  • Use the same computer workflow and timing that you will face on test day.
  • Book only after your reviewed practice evidence supports the planned date.
  • Keep the application deadline and result-delivery time inside the booking decision.

How long do I have for IELTS Speaking Part 2?

You have one minute to prepare and should speak for one to two minutes. You may make notes during the preparation time.

Do I need to answer every cue-card bullet separately?

No. The bullets help you organise relevant content, but your response should develop as one connected long turn focused on the main topic.

Should I write full sentences during the preparation minute?

Usually no. Short keywords, arrows and prompts are faster and support flexible speaking better than a written script.

What if I cannot think of an impressive cue-card example?

Choose the first workable real or clearly framed example that you can describe. Relevance, development and communication matter more than an extraordinary story.

How does MKS practise IELTS cue cards?

MKS uses one-minute planning drills, recorded long turns, criterion feedback and new-topic retesting without promising a band result.
