IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors Explained for Nepali Students
Read each criterion as evidence across the full interview and use recordings to choose corrections that improve communication on new topics.
Connect descriptor wording to what a listener can actually hear
Speaking descriptors are most useful beside a recording. They help separate a pause caused by idea planning from repeated word searching, or a pronunciation issue from a grammar error.
Use the current official descriptors. The official Speaking band descriptors define performance across fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. The four criteria have equal weighting. Assessment happens across the complete recorded interview, so one impressive Part 2 story or one grammar mistake cannot represent the whole performance. A classroom score estimate should be supported by recorded evidence and should never be presented as an official result.
Fluency and coherence combine continuity with understandable development. Examiners consider speech rate, hesitation, repetition, self-correction, sequencing, relevance and cohesive features. Speaking extremely fast is not the goal. A useful diagnosis asks whether pauses prepare content or repeatedly search for basic language, whether ideas progress and whether long turns remain relevant. Practise extending an answer through reason, detail, example or comparison while allowing natural pausing instead of filling every space with memorised connectors.
Lexical resource concerns range, accuracy, appropriacy, collocation, style and the ability to paraphrase. It does not reward forcing idioms into unrelated answers. Build vocabulary by topic relationships and functions—describing change, comparing choices, qualifying a claim and explaining consequences—then use it in recorded responses. When a word is unavailable, practise explaining the meaning another way. Mark words that are repeated because no alternative is available and words that sound advanced but are inaccurate.
Grammatical range and accuracy consider the structures produced and their control. A mix of simple and complex sentences is useful when it expresses different meanings. Review repeated errors in tense, agreement, articles, clauses and sentence completion, but do not stop after every slip and destroy fluency. Pronunciation assesses intelligibility and the use of features such as individual sounds, word stress, rhythm, chunking and intonation. The target is speech that can be understood without excessive listener effort, not removal of a Nepali accent.
Create a four-column recording review. Use an official sample prompt, record without a script and transcribe a short section. Mark fluency breakdowns, vocabulary choices, grammar patterns and places where pronunciation affects understanding. Choose one correction from only one or two columns, practise a short controlled exercise and then record a different prompt. The official sample test questions provide appropriate practice material. Compare several recordings before deciding that a feature has transferred.
Start from evidence
Match the class plan to your current score profile, application requirement and realistic test date.
Review the feedback
Useful feedback explains the error, links it to an IELTS criterion and gives a concrete next practice step.
Prepare for delivery
Build language skill and the computer workflow together before a timed official test.
Use this checklist before paying or booking
Ask the centre for current written information. The table turns general marketing language into verifiable questions.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fluency | Speech continues with manageable effort. | Pauses repetition speed and self-correction. |
| Coherence | Ideas remain relevant and logically developed. | Sequence links references and topic extension. |
| Lexical range | Vocabulary covers familiar and abstract topics. | Flexible topic language and paraphrase. |
| Lexical control | Meaning stays accurate and appropriate. | Collocation style word choice and repair. |
| Grammar range | Structures express different relationships. | Simple and complex forms used purposefully. |
| Grammar accuracy | Errors do not repeatedly weaken communication. | Track persistent tense article and clause issues. |
| Pronunciation sounds | Individual words remain recognisable. | Problem phonemes endings and word stress. |
| Pronunciation flow | Connected speech supports intelligibility. | Rhythm chunking sentence stress and intonation. |
| Whole interview | Evidence comes from Parts 1–3. | Use several topics and interaction types. |
| Transfer review | Rehearsed improvement may not generalise. | Retest the correction on a new prompt. |
What makes the MKS IELTS learning system different
Classroom teaching, revision, independent practice and longer support work as one system instead of separate add-ons.
Three learning modes
Choose physical, online or hybrid learning and confirm the current timetable that fits your routine.
Recordings for every mode
Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit lessons and catch up on missed work.
iOS and Android access
Continue structured IELTS practice beyond the live class through the MKS digital system.
Physical books
Use organised print materials together with digital practice instead of scattered files.
Six-month access
The eight-week guided course connects to six-month learning access and continued support.
Multiple suitable classes
Students needing more repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge.
Keep every section inside the same improvement loop
Attempt, diagnose, correct, repeat and retest. Your overall goal should never hide a required section minimum.
A balanced weekly routine
- Review Listening distractors, spelling and paraphrase recognition rather than only counting correct answers.
- Track Reading accuracy by question type and add timed sections only after the method is stable.
- Use the official Writing criteria to revise task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar.
- Record Speaking answers and review fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation without memorising scripts.
- Keep an error log and use the next mock to test whether the correction actually worked.
Before enrolment
- Confirm Academic or General Training and the required overall and section bands.
- Ask for the current timetable, fee, inclusions, teacher-feedback process and access period in writing.
- Test the commute, device, internet and study hours needed for the chosen class mode.
- Ask how the centre handles missed classes, weak skills and a test date later than the live course.
Before the official test
- Check the authorised test partner for current dates, locations, fees and delivery options.
- Use the same computer workflow and timing that you will face on test day.
- Book only after your reviewed practice evidence supports the planned date.
- Keep the application deadline and result-delivery time inside the booking decision.

What are the four IELTS Speaking criteria?
They are fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Each criterion has equal weighting.
Does IELTS require a British accent?
No. Pronunciation assessment focuses on intelligibility and control of pronunciation features. A Nepali accent is not automatically a problem.
Is speaking fast the same as being fluent?
No. Fluency includes continuity and manageable effort, while coherence requires relevant logical development. Excessive speed can reduce clarity.
Do idioms automatically improve lexical resource?
No. Vocabulary must be accurate, appropriate and flexible. Forced or incorrect idioms can weaken control rather than improve it.
How does MKS use Speaking band descriptors?
MKS reviews recordings across all four criteria, selects focused corrections and retests them on new prompts without promising a band.
