IELTS Reading Band 7 Strategy for Nepali Students

Start with the correct module and official structure. The official Academic Reading format gives 60 minutes for three sections and 40 questions, with no additional transfer time. Academic passages total roughly 2,150–2,750 words and may be descriptive, narrative or argumentative. General Training Reading uses different material and usually needs more correct answers for the same band. Practise the module required by the receiving organisation rather than mixing score expectations.

Use a question-led evidence workflow. Read the instructions, mark the answer limit and identify the task family before searching the passage. For ordered questions, use distinctive names, dates, technical terms and paraphrased ideas to locate a narrow area, then read that area carefully. Matching headings requires the main purpose of a paragraph, while matching information asks for a specific detail. True or False decisions depend on agreement or contradiction; Not Given means the text provides neither. Outside knowledge must not decide the answer.

Build vocabulary through paraphrase pairs instead of isolated word lists. Record the wording in the question, the matching wording in the passage, the grammatical form and the evidence sentence. Review common academic relationships such as cause, contrast, qualification and comparison. When an answer is wrong, classify whether the cause was vocabulary, lost location, misunderstood reference, instruction error, spelling, word limit, distractor or time pressure. That classification creates a practice action; simply reading the answer key does not.

Develop timing in stages. First complete small question sets without a strict limit and explain the evidence for every answer. Next use a section limit while preserving review quality. Finally complete three-section tests in 60 minutes on a computer, leaving a small checking window. Do not force an identical number of minutes for every passage if one is clearly harder. Use checkpoints and move on from one stubborn item so it does not remove time from several answerable questions.

Measure Band 7 readiness across comparable tests. The official scoring guide lists about 30 correct for Academic Band 7 and about 35 for General Training Band 7, but states that exact conversion varies slightly. Track total accuracy, each question family, spelling and timing across several reviewed attempts. A stable score slightly above the requirement is stronger evidence than a single test at the boundary. Continue targeted repair between full tests.
