IELTS Band Score Calculator and Section Score Guide 2026
Average the four section bands, apply the official rounding rule and then check every receiving-organisation section minimum separately.
The overall band is simple maths but the application decision is not
A correct calculator prevents rounding mistakes, while a section-by-section check prevents a strong average from hiding a required weak component.
Use the official formula: Listening plus Reading plus Writing plus Speaking, divided by four. The IELTS scoring guide reports the overall result in whole and half bands. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0 and an exact 7.5 remains 7.5. Enter only official section bands in half-band steps rather than estimated practice percentages.
Check the course rule after calculating. A profile of Listening 7.5, Reading 7.5, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 7.0 averages 7.0, but it does not satisfy a programme requiring 6.5 in every section. The overall calculation and institutional eligibility are separate decisions. Record both the overall target and four section floors before interpreting a practice result.
Listening and Reading begin with 40 questions, one mark per correct answer, then raw marks convert to the nine-band scale. Official averages list Listening at about 16 for Band 5, 23 for Band 6, 30 for Band 7 and 35 for Band 8. Academic Reading uses similar listed averages, while General Training Reading generally needs more correct answers for the same band. Exact conversions vary slightly by test version.
Writing is not a raw-mark test. Examiners use task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Each criterion is equally weighted within a task, while Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. Speaking likewise uses four equally weighted criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.
Use a calculator as a planning tool rather than a score promise. Model which section change would satisfy both the overall and component requirement, then target that skill with reviewed practice. A mock score is evidence from one performance, not an official result. Track several comparable attempts and use the authenticated Test Report Form for any real application.
Start from evidence
Match the class plan to your current score profile, application requirement and realistic test date.
Review the feedback
Useful feedback explains the error, links it to an IELTS criterion and gives a concrete next practice step.
Prepare for delivery
Build language skill and the computer workflow together before a timed official test.
Use this checklist before paying or booking
Ask the centre for current written information. The table turns general marketing language into verifiable questions.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 6.5 6.5 5.0 7.0 | Average 6.25. | Official overall rounds to 6.5. |
| 6.5 7.0 6.0 7.5 | Average 6.75. | Official overall rounds to 7.0. |
| 7.0 7.0 7.0 7.0 | Average 7.0. | Overall remains 7.0. |
| 7.5 8.0 7.0 7.5 | Average 7.5. | Overall remains 7.5. |
| Listening raw mark | One mark for each correct answer. | Approximate band conversion can vary. |
| Academic Reading | About 30 is the listed Band 7 average. | Use the Academic conversion context. |
| General Reading | Usually needs more correct answers. | Do not use the Academic table. |
| Writing | Four criteria and two task weights apply. | Task 2 carries more weight. |
| Speaking | Four criteria carry equal weighting. | Review a complete recorded performance. |
| Application check | Overall alone may not satisfy the course. | Compare all four section minimums. |
What makes the MKS IELTS learning system different
Classroom teaching, revision, independent practice and longer support work as one system instead of separate add-ons.
Three learning modes
Choose physical, online or hybrid learning and confirm the current timetable that fits your routine.
Recordings for every mode
Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit lessons and catch up on missed work.
iOS and Android access
Continue structured IELTS practice beyond the live class through the MKS digital system.
Physical books
Use organised print materials together with digital practice instead of scattered files.
Six-month access
The eight-week guided course connects to six-month learning access and continued support.
Multiple suitable classes
Students needing more repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge.
Keep every section inside the same improvement loop
Attempt, diagnose, correct, repeat and retest. Your overall goal should never hide a required section minimum.
A balanced weekly routine
- Review Listening distractors, spelling and paraphrase recognition rather than only counting correct answers.
- Track Reading accuracy by question type and add timed sections only after the method is stable.
- Use the official Writing criteria to revise task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar.
- Record Speaking answers and review fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation without memorising scripts.
- Keep an error log and use the next mock to test whether the correction actually worked.
Before enrolment
- Confirm Academic or General Training and the required overall and section bands.
- Ask for the current timetable, fee, inclusions, teacher-feedback process and access period in writing.
- Test the commute, device, internet and study hours needed for the chosen class mode.
- Ask how the centre handles missed classes, weak skills and a test date later than the live course.
Before the official test
- Check the authorised test partner for current dates, locations, fees and delivery options.
- Use the same computer workflow and timing that you will face on test day.
- Book only after your reviewed practice evidence supports the planned date.
- Keep the application deadline and result-delivery time inside the booking decision.

How do I calculate my IELTS overall band?
Add the four section bands, divide by four and apply the official whole or half-band rounding rule.
What happens when the IELTS average ends in .25?
Official IELTS rounds an average ending in .25 up to the next half band, such as 6.25 becoming 6.5.
What happens when the IELTS average ends in .75?
Official IELTS rounds an average ending in .75 up to the next whole band, such as 6.75 becoming 7.0.
Is 30 correct answers always Band 7?
No. It is an official average for Listening and Academic Reading, but exact conversion can vary slightly by test version and General Training Reading differs.
Does an overall 7 guarantee university eligibility?
No. The programme may also require minimum bands in each section, a specific test type and other English evidence conditions.
