Turn each missed answer into a specific listening correction
Listening improvement is not just exposure to English. It requires prediction, attention control, instruction accuracy and evidence from later one-play retesting.
Learn the structure first. The official IELTS Listening format has four parts with ten questions each. Parts 1 and 2 use everyday social situations, while Parts 3 and 4 use educational or training contexts. Questions follow the order of information, recordings are heard once and different English accents are used.
Before the audio, read instructions and predict the answer type. Decide whether the gap needs a name, number, noun, adjective or place, and mark the word limit. In multiple choice, underline the difference between options rather than reading each as a separate sentence. In map tasks, locate the start point and direction language. Prediction reduces working-memory load but must remain flexible when the speaker paraphrases.
During the recording, follow meaning rather than waiting for the exact word from the question. IELTS commonly uses synonyms, changed word forms and corrections by the speaker. Mark an answer and move on when one item is missed, because losing attention can turn one error into several. Keep spelling, singular or plural endings and number formats under control.
Review with the transcript only after a one-play attempt. Identify whether the error came from not hearing a sound, not knowing the phrase, following a distractor, losing location, violating the instruction or spelling the answer incorrectly. Replay the small segment, shadow the phrase, explain the paraphrase and then attempt a new item of the same type without pausing.
Measure progress across complete sections. Official guidance lists about 30 correct answers as the average Band 7 conversion, but the exact boundary can vary. Track results by part and question type and build a margin above the target. Use full Listening tests after targeted repair, with the same headphones and computer workflow expected on test day.

- Use the same computer workflow and timing that you will face on test day.
