UK University Initial Deposit Requirements 2026 Guide

An initial tuition deposit can secure a place, meet an offer condition or unlock the CAS process, but UK universities do not use one national amount or refund rule. For 2026 entry, applicants should follow the exact offer letter and current university policy rather than an agent list or last year’s screenshot. This guide uses official sources checked on 24 July 2026.

Quick answer: A tuition deposit is normally an advance part-payment of tuition, not an extra fee. Current 2026/27 examples include £2,000 for relevant taught postgraduate Student visa applicants at the University of Leeds, £2,500 for most postgraduate taught programmes at Cardiff University, £5,000 at the University of Brighton, £5,000 at Bournemouth University for most countries and regions, and £5,500 at Northumbria University. Requirements, exemptions, deadlines and refunds differ.

What a tuition deposit does

  • Shows commitment to the offer and may reserve a place.
  • Forms part of tuition already paid and reduces the remaining balance.
  • May be required before the university begins or completes CAS checks.
  • Can be shown on the CAS as tuition paid once the payment has cleared and been recorded.
  • Is governed by university-specific payment and refund terms.

The University of Leeds explicitly says its £2,000 deposit is deducted from course tuition and included in the CAS. Bournemouth’s 2026/27 policy similarly states that the deposit supports the visa application as a part-payment toward tuition. Do not add the deposit again when calculating the total course fee.

These examples are not a recommended range. Your offer can specify a different amount because of course, study level, start date, country or risk checks, scholarship, sponsorship or policy change.

When should you pay?

  1. Receive and read the official offer.
  2. Meet the academic and English conditions required at that stage.
  3. Complete any pre-CAS questionnaire, credibility interview or document checks.
  4. Confirm the deposit amount and deadline in the university portal.
  5. Read refund, deferral and cancellation terms before payment.
  6. Pay through the official portal or university-named payment partner.
  7. Keep the receipt and wait for the university to confirm cleared funds.
  8. Check that tuition already paid is correctly recorded during the CAS process.

Leeds says it asks for the deposit after the applicant has met academic and English conditions and accepted an unconditional offer. Other universities can collect a conditional deposit earlier. Payment alone does not guarantee CAS: all academic, financial, credibility and compliance checks still apply.

Deposit exemptions

Exemptions vary. Common examples can include an acceptable official sponsor, specified scholarship or funding arrangements, partner progression routes or applicants who do not need Student visa sponsorship. Do not self-declare an exemption. Upload the evidence requested by the university and wait for written confirmation.

A scholarship may reduce the tuition balance without removing the deposit. Cardiff notes exceptions for some clinical programmes even where a full tuition scholarship exists. Northumbria says sponsored or Federal Aid students may be exempt. Read the rule for the exact course.

Refund rules are not uniform

Before paying, save the policy version that applies to your intake. Check separately for:

  • Withdrawal before CAS issuance.
  • Withdrawal after CAS but before a visa application.
  • Visa refusal and evidence deadlines.
  • Refusal involving credibility, false information or fraudulent documents.
  • Course cancellation by the university.
  • Deferral to another intake.
  • Late arrival or failure to enrol.
  • Cooling-off rights and administration deductions.

Manchester Metropolitan University’s 2026/27 policy, for example, describes specific full-refund circumstances and situations where an administration charge or refusal of refund may apply; it also says the required deposit becomes non-refundable after a visa decision when the CAS is set to USED. Abertay’s guidance allows certain post-CAS refunds but excludes fraudulent or misleading submissions and can retain part of tuition in other cases. Hull’s 2026/27 policy contains its own base deposit and non-refund clauses. Never assume “visa refusal means automatic full refund”.

Safe payment checklist from Nepal

  • Start from the university’s official domain and log in to the applicant portal.
  • Verify the beneficiary or payment-partner name against the portal.
  • Do not transfer tuition to an individual’s account.
  • Be suspicious of changed bank details sent only by email; verify independently.
  • Use your application or student number exactly as instructed.
  • Check currency-conversion, remittance and card fees before sending.
  • Keep the payment confirmation, SWIFT or transfer reference and portal receipt.
  • Do not send more money merely because someone promises faster CAS processing.

Deposit, CAS and visa funds

Tuition paid and shown on the CAS can affect the outstanding tuition amount used in the Student visa financial calculation, subject to current UKVI rules. It does not replace the separate maintenance requirement. University of Exeter guidance says tuition fee deposits appear automatically in its CAS application system, while applicants may need to report other payments for verification. Always check the final CAS for correct tuition, scholarship and payments before using it.

  • What exact condition does payment satisfy?
  • What other CAS checks remain?
  • When is the deadline and how long can funds take to clear?

  • Is there an administration deduction?
  • Does my scholarship or sponsorship change the requirement?
  • Will the payment be shown correctly on the CAS?
