What to Do If You Miss UK University Intake 2027
Missing a UK intake does not mean the study plan has ended. The safe response is to identify exactly which stage failed, ask the university what remains possible and choose between late consideration, Clearing, deferral, another confirmed intake or reapplication.
Quick answer: Do not travel or submit a weak visa file to preserve the start date. Contact admissions and the international team, document the official outcome, protect any refund rights and rebuild a realistic timeline for the correct course.
Identify what was missed
- Academic application deadline.
- Offer-condition or English deadline.
- Deposit payment date.
- Pre-CAS interview or document review.
- ATAS, TB or finance evidence timing.
- CAS issuance date.
- Visa decision or latest arrival date.
The solution depends on the stage. An open application portal cannot override a passed CAS deadline.
Option 1: Late consideration
Ask whether the exact course remains open to international applicants and whether enough time remains for all stages. Undergraduate applicants can use UCAS after the equal-consideration date when courses still have places, but providers are not required to consider late applications.
Option 2: Clearing
For 2027 undergraduate entry, UCAS Clearing opens on 2 July and the last date to add a Clearing choice is 18 October 2027. International students must still meet entry requirements and have enough CAS and visa time. Use only live vacancies and obtain a formal offer.
Option 3: Approved deferral
Request to move the same offer to January, May or the following September if the course permits it. Confirm the new offer, conditions, tuition, scholarship, deposit and CAS process in writing. Read the deferred entry guide.
Option 4: A different intake or reapplication
Search for the same or a genuinely suitable course with a confirmed later start. Reapply when the university requires a new assessment or when the original course is not available. Do not select an unrelated programme only to avoid a gap.
Protect money and records
- Read the deposit and withdrawal policy.
- Request refund or transfer through the official process.
- Keep payment receipts and university emails.
- Do not charge back before using the contract’s procedure unless professional advice supports it.
- Record whether scholarship and accommodation payments are separate.
If the visa is pending or granted
Contact the university’s international student team immediately. A changed start, withdrawn CAS or missed latest-arrival date can affect sponsorship and immigration permission. Follow current GOV.UK guidance and do not travel on assumptions.
Use the extra time well
- Retake English if needed.
- Strengthen subject preparation and recent academic evidence.
- Correct document inconsistencies.
- Build finance through genuine, traceable sources.
- Research modules, career fit and total cost more carefully.
- Plan accommodation and pre-departure steps earlier.
Explaining the missed intake later
Keep the explanation factual: state the missed stage, the official outcome and what changed in the new plan. Avoid blaming the university without evidence or hiding a previous visa refusal or withdrawn CAS when asked.
Common mistakes
- Travelling after the latest-arrival date without approval.
- Submitting a visa file before the evidence is ready.
- Assuming the deposit automatically moves.
- Ignoring a withdrawn or changed CAS.
- Choosing any open course rather than a relevant one.
- Creating false documents to save the intake.
How MKS Education can help

Frequently asked questions
Can I join late after teaching starts?
Only if the university formally permits it and sponsorship and immigration conditions remain valid.
Will I lose my deposit?
It depends on the contract, reason and deadlines. Use the official refund or transfer process.
Can I use the same CAS for a later intake?
Do not assume so. The university must provide the correct CAS for the course and dates.
Does missing an intake cause a visa refusal?
Not by itself, but an invalid CAS, late travel or inaccurate application can create serious problems.
