Deferred Entry in UK Universities 2027 Process and Requirements

Deferred entry means delaying the course start, usually by one year, with the university’s approval. Deferral is not automatic and can be unavailable for particular courses, scholarships, placements or funded research projects.

Quick answer: Ask the university before applying or as early as possible after the offer. Obtain written confirmation of the new start, conditions, tuition, scholarship, deposit and reapplication requirements. A 2026 CAS or visa does not simply transfer to 2027.

UCAS deferred entry

Current UCAS guidance says applicants can select a deferred start when adding a choice, but should contact the university first. Deferral is usually for one year and remains at the provider’s discretion.

The original offer conditions still apply. If a conditional offer requires grades achieved in 2026 for a 2027 deferred place, those grades must be met in 2026.

Requesting a deferral after applying

  1. Read the course’s deferral policy.
  2. Contact admissions with the application ID, course and requested start.
  3. Give a concise, truthful reason and plan for the gap period.
  4. Ask whether the course, campus and placement exist in 2027.
  5. Obtain a revised offer or written decision.
  6. Confirm financial and immigration consequences.

A late request may be refused or require a fresh application.

Courses that may restrict deferral

Medicine, dentistry, performance, professional placements, limited-capacity programmes, funded studentships and courses changing curriculum can use special rules. A supervisor or department may need to approve research deferral.

Scholarship and tuition impact

A scholarship for one academic year may not transfer. Tuition fees, deposit levels, instalment plans and refund terms can change. Ask whether the award is deferred, reassessed or cancelled and whether the deposit remains credited.

Holding a deferred place

UCAS says an applicant holding a deferred 2027 place cannot submit a new application in the next cycle at the same time. To apply elsewhere, the applicant may need to withdraw or be released. Understand the consequences before accepting.

CAS and Student visa

CAS is tied to the sponsor, course and dates. The university will issue a new or updated CAS only through its process when the deferred start approaches and conditions are satisfied. If a visa was already granted, contact the university’s international student team and use current UKVI guidance; do not assume the old permission remains usable.

Productive deferral plan

  • Improve relevant academic or English skills.
  • Gain genuine work, research or volunteer experience.
  • Complete finances without using artificial transactions.
  • Keep contact details and passport information current.
  • Monitor course, fee, scholarship and visa changes.
  • Meet every confirmation or re-enrolment deadline.

Deferral versus reapplication

Deferral is efficient when the same course and university remain the clear choice and approval is formal. Reapplication may be necessary when the university refuses deferral, the course changes, a scholarship must be competed for again or the applicant wants different choices.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the university must approve one year.
  • Not checking scholarship and fee changes.
  • Ignoring offer conditions during the gap year.
  • Trying to hold a deferred place while applying elsewhere.
  • Using the old CAS or visa without written advice.
  • Letting the passport or English result expire.

It also provides IELTS, PTE and Duolingo preparation through physical, online and hybrid classes with LMS practice, recordings and mock tests. The university decides deferral and CAS; UKVI decides immigration permission.
