UK Study Cost Calculator for Nepali Students 2026 to 2027
A realistic UK study-cost calculation includes more than tuition and the Student visa maintenance figure. Nepali students should model tuition, payments already made, real living costs, immigration charges, travel, accommodation setup and a contingency for the complete study period.
Quick answer: Use the official course fee and CAS, calculate the current visa financial requirement separately, then build a monthly living budget based on the city and contract. Do not treat the UKVI minimum as a promise that actual living costs will be sufficient.
Core calculator formula
Total first-year cash plan = unpaid first-year tuition + real living budget + visa fee + immigration health surcharge + TB/ATAS/document costs + flight + accommodation deposit/setup + contingency.
Keep scholarships and paid tuition as separate deductions only after they are formally confirmed.
1. Tuition input
Use the exact international fee on the official course page and offer. Record:
- Annual fee and total course duration.
- Tuition deposit.
- Scholarship or discount confirmed in writing.
- Payments already made and shown on CAS.
- Instalment dates and any annual fee increase.
- Placement-year or continuation fee.
For a one-year master’s, include the entire course fee. For a multi-year bachelor’s, build a separate annual and full-degree model.
2. Student visa financial requirement
Current GOV.UK guidance says a Student normally needs the course fees shown on CAS for one academic year, minus qualifying payments, plus maintenance of:
- £1,529 per month for up to 9 months in London — maximum £13,761.
- £1,171 per month for up to 9 months outside London — maximum £10,539.
Eligibility for exemptions and acceptable evidence depends on current rules. The money normally must meet the applicable holding and evidence requirements. Verify again on the visa application date.
3. Real monthly living budget
Create city-specific lines for:
- Rent and contract length.
- Utilities and internet if excluded.
- Food and household supplies.
- Local transport.
- Phone.
- Laundry, clothing and personal care.
- Books, software and course materials.
- Health, dental and prescription costs not otherwise covered.
- Social and emergency spending.
Use actual accommodation listings and the university’s student-budget page. A 12-month rent contract can exceed the nine-month visa calculation.
4. Immigration and travel
Add the Student visa application fee, IHS based on the immigration permission length, approved TB testing, biometrics or service charges where applicable, translations, document courier, flight and airport-to-accommodation travel. Fees can change; use official calculators and pages at payment time.
5. Accommodation setup
Include a hall prepayment or private deposit, advance rent, bedding, kitchen items, winter clothing, local transport card and first grocery shop. Check whether a private landlord requires a UK guarantor or larger advance payment.
6. Contingency
Add a transparent emergency reserve for exchange-rate movement, delayed work, unexpected travel or replacement devices. Part-time employment should be treated as optional income, not as the source required to pay tuition or meet visa funds.
Worked structure
Build a spreadsheet with columns for GBP amount, payment date, confirmed/source, NPR conversion rate and NPR amount. Use the current bank or permitted exchange-rate source on the date of planning; do not freeze one NPR conversion for the entire year.
Annual versus total-degree view
- Visa evidence view: the amount required under the current Student rules.
- First-year cash-flow view: every payment due before and during year one.
- Total-degree view: all years of tuition and living costs, with cautious inflation and exchange scenarios.
These numbers answer different questions and should not be mixed.
Cost-reduction checks
- Compare London and outside-London total cost.
- Check halls versus private housing with bills included.
- Apply for scholarships before their deadlines.
- Choose a realistic commute.
- Read instalment and late-payment policies.
- Use student discounts only after confirming eligibility.
Common calculator mistakes
- Subtracting an unconfirmed scholarship.
- Using only the visa maintenance figure as a living budget.
- Ignoring a 12-month tenancy.
- Leaving out IHS and setup costs.
- Assuming part-time work is guaranteed.
- Using an outdated exchange rate or visa fee.
- Planning only the first year of a multi-year degree.

Frequently asked questions
Is £10,539 enough outside London?
It is the current maximum maintenance amount used for the visa calculation, not a guarantee that it covers actual living costs.
Can I subtract my tuition deposit?
For visa evidence, qualifying payments shown on CAS can affect the course-fee amount. Follow current UKVI rules and CAS wording.
Should I convert everything to NPR?
Keep the source budget in GBP and add a dated NPR scenario so exchange-rate changes remain visible.
Can part-time work pay the remaining tuition?
Do not base the essential plan on uncertain work. Employment is restricted by visa conditions and not guaranteed.
