Monthly Student Budget in UK for International Students 2026

A useful UK student budget is based on an actual room, contract, commute and study pattern—not a single national average. International students should plan recurring monthly spending, irregular annual costs and an arrival fund separately. This guide uses official and sector information checked on 24 July 2026.

Quick answer: Current university estimates show how widely budgets vary. Cambridge estimates £1,305 per month for 2026/27. King’s College London estimates £1,331 at the lower end, £1,770 on average and £2,342 at the higher end. Oxford estimates £1,405–£2,105. Current Student visa maintenance figures are £1,171 outside London and £1,529 in London, but those are evidence thresholds rather than complete personal budgets.

Build the monthly budget in seven lines

These sources use different assumptions and should not be combined into an artificial national average. Use the categories to structure your own plan and the local university estimate as a reasonableness check.

Convert weekly rent correctly

Many UK rooms are advertised weekly. Use:

Monthly rent = weekly rent × 52 ÷ 12.

For example, £180 per week is about £780 per month. Then multiply the weekly rate by the contract weeks to find the total liability. A 40-week and 52-week contract should not be compared by weekly rent alone.

A planning template

Start with blank or verified figures rather than copying a sample as a promise:

  • Rent: use a real available room and exact contract.
  • Bills: enter zero only when the contract confirms all are included.
  • Food: track a realistic grocery basket and campus-meal pattern.
  • Transport: price the actual route and student discount eligibility.
  • Phone and internet: use the planned contract.
  • Study costs: use the course page and department list.
  • Personal and social: choose a sustainable limit.
  • Emergency reserve contribution: add something every month.

Update the sheet after the first four weeks in the UK using actual bank transactions. A budget is a control system, not a one-time forecast.

Visa evidence versus twelve-month cash flow

GOV.UK currently requires £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London for up to nine months, subject to exemptions and evidence rules. A twelve-month master’s student still needs money for the full period. For example, Cambridge’s £1,305 guide becomes £15,660 over twelve months, and King’s average becomes £21,240. The visa cap does not pay months ten to twelve.

Arrival costs should be separate

  • Accommodation deposit and advance rent.
  • Temporary accommodation.
  • Airport transfer and initial local travel.
  • Bedding, kitchen items and cleaning supplies.
  • Winter clothing and footwear.
  • SIM, phone or laptop setup.
  • First large grocery shop.

Do not spread these costs invisibly across a monthly average if the money is needed before or immediately after arrival. Keep an arrival fund and a monthly living fund.

Ways to control spending

  • Compare housing by total contract cost and travel, not rent alone.
  • Cook routinely and set a separate eating-out amount.
  • Use university libraries, equipment loans and free software where available.
  • Buy student transport products only after checking the route and break-even point.
  • Track subscriptions and cancel unused renewals.
  • Buy used items from reputable sources, but avoid housing and payment scams.
  • Review spending weekly before a small leak becomes a monthly problem.

Do not depend on part-time work

Permitted work depends on visa conditions, course level and term dates. Jobs and hours are not guaranteed, and earnings must also cover tax, transport and daily life. Build the essential budget from confirmed funds and treat any employment income conservatively.
