How to Prepare Financial Documents for UK Study

Financial preparation for UK study has two related but different parts: proving affordability to the university during admissions or pre-CAS checks, and meeting the legal Student visa financial requirement. A university can request more evidence than the minimum document ultimately used for UKVI. This workflow uses Immigration Rules updated on 1 July 2026 and sources checked on 24 July 2026.

Quick answer: Start from the final CAS tuition balance, add the correct London or outside-London maintenance amount, choose an acceptable source of funds, plan the 28-day holding period where required, and collect evidence whose latest date is within 31 days of the visa application. Parent funds require relationship evidence and written consent. Loans and official sponsorship use their own document rules.

Step 1: separate university and visa checklists

Stage Purpose Possible documents
Admission or deposit Show ability to accept and pay for the course Funding declaration, sponsor details, deposit receipt or scholarship evidence.
Pre-CAS University sponsor compliance and credibility checks Bank evidence, loan approval, source-of-funds explanation, payment receipt and interview responses.
Student visa Meet Appendix Student and Appendix Finance Qualifying account evidence, parent documents, compliant loan letter or official sponsorship evidence.

Do not assume that passing a university check guarantees the visa requirement. Also do not upload extra documents without understanding what they show; inconsistent records can create questions.

Step 2: calculate the amount from the CAS

For an applicant who must prove funds, calculate outstanding course fees for one academic year as stated on the CAS, plus maintenance. Current amounts are £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London for up to nine months. A partial month is rounded up. Eligible tuition already paid must be on the CAS or evidenced as permitted. Recheck the final CAS before applying.

Step 3: choose an acceptable funding route

  • Money in the applicant’s qualifying personal account.
  • Money in a qualifying joint account where the applicant is an account holder.
  • Money in a parent or legal guardian’s qualifying account, with relationship proof and consent.
  • A compliant student loan from a qualifying government, government-sponsored company or regulated educational loan scheme.
  • Official financial sponsorship from a category permitted by Appendix Finance.
  • A permitted combination of acceptable sources.

Step 4: plan the 28-day period

Cash funds must normally remain at or above the required amount for 28 consecutive days. The most recent evidence must be dated within 31 days before the application. The period is counted back from the closing balance date on the most recently dated evidence. Build a calendar using the intended online application date and keep a currency buffer because UKVI converts foreign currency at the OANDA spot rate on the application date.

Step 5: check the financial institution

Appendix Finance excludes funds where satisfactory verification cannot be completed, the institution is not properly regulated, or it does not use electronic record keeping. Confirm that the bank can produce verifiable evidence showing the account holder, account number, institution, date coverage and balances requested by the university or visa process.

Step 6: prepare source-specific documents

Applicant savings

Use a qualifying accessible account and evidence covering the full required period. Avoid a last-minute balance drop.

Parent savings

Add a birth certificate or other acceptable proof of relationship and a signed parent or guardian consent letter allowing use of the funds.

Student loan

Appendix Finance requires a loan letter dated no more than six months before application. It must identify a qualifying student loan, the applicant, amount, lender status and acceptable release timing, with no release condition other than successful study application as described by the rule.

Official sponsorship

Use the CAS where the Student sponsor states its sponsorship or a compliant official sponsor letter. A promise from an ordinary private individual is not official financial sponsorship.

Step 7: reconcile every number

  • CAS tuition fee and tuition already paid.
  • Scholarship amount on the offer and CAS.
  • Deposit receipt and university account.
  • Bank or loan amount after currency conversion.
  • Course location and maintenance category.
  • Course length used for the capped maintenance calculation.
  • Applicant, parent and document spellings.

Common preparation mistakes

  • Starting 28 days before the full required balance is available.
  • Letting the balance fall below the requirement for one day.
  • Using the statement issue date instead of understanding the closing-balance period.
  • Submitting parent funds without relationship and consent evidence.
  • Using shares, credit limits, overdrafts or inaccessible instruments.
  • Relying on an unregulated or unverifiable institution.
  • Forgetting the OANDA exchange-rate movement.
  • Using a loan letter missing required statements or release timing.
  • Applying with incorrect CAS payments.

A final document-control folder

  1. Save the final CAS and offer.
  2. Save tuition and deposit receipts.
  3. Keep the exact financial evidence used.
  4. Add parent relationship and consent documents where relevant.
  5. Add loan or sponsorship evidence where relevant.
  6. Keep translations required under the application instructions.
  7. Record the application date, 28-day calculation and currency buffer.

Frequently asked questions

Does every student submit bank evidence?

Can I combine two accounts?

Acceptable sources may be combined, but each must satisfy the rules and collectively cover the required amount and period.

Is the university pre-CAS checklist the same as UKVI?

No. The university may request additional evidence for sponsor compliance.

When should I book the visa application?

Only after the full required period is complete, evidence is current and the CAS is correct.
