Chevening Scholarship for Nepali Students

Chevening is the UK government’s global scholarship programme for emerging leaders, and Nepal is an eligible Chevening country. The next published cycle is for study in 2027–28: applications open on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. This guide reflects official Chevening information checked on 24 July 2026.

Quick answer: A Nepali applicant needs an eligible undergraduate degree, at least 2,800 hours of post-degree work experience, three eligible UK taught master’s course choices and a convincing record of leadership, influence, networking and career impact. A full award normally covers tuition, approved economy travel, the visa application, specified allowances and a monthly living stipend, subject to the award terms.

Eligibility for applicants from Nepal

Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country and demonstrate a clear intention to support the country of award.
Commit to returning to the home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after completing the undergraduate degree.
Hold an undergraduate qualification that permits entry to a UK master’s programme.
Have finished undergraduate study at least two years before the Chevening application deadline, even if the certificate is issued later.
Apply to three different eligible UK master’s courses and secure an unconditional offer from at least one by the published deadline.

Eligible experience can include full-time or part-time employment, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships. The form calculates hours from weeks multiplied by hours per week. Do not double-count roles, invent hours or include experience gained before undergraduate completion when the current rule requires post-degree experience.

Which UK courses qualify?

Chevening-eligible courses are full-time, UK-based taught master’s degrees that start in the autumn, last between nine and 12 months and lead to a master’s qualification. Part-time, distance-learning, PhD, DPhil and research-focused MRes programmes are not eligible. A course with more than one month of study outside the UK is also excluded.

You list three different courses in the scholarship application and apply separately to the universities. Choose programmes that form one coherent career pathway, meet your academic profile and connect to a defined problem in Nepal. Check the official course finder and each university page because titles and eligibility can change.

What a full Chevening award normally covers

How to build a competitive application

Use evidence, not adjectives

Replace claims such as “I am a strong leader” with a structured example: the situation, your decision, the people you influenced, the measurable result and what you learned. Show your own contribution rather than describing only the organisation.

Connect four parts of one story

Your leadership, relationship-building, course choices and career plan should reinforce each other. Start with a specific challenge in Nepal, show what you have already done, identify the skill gap a UK master’s will close and describe credible actions after returning.

Choose courses before writing

Compare modules, teaching methods, specialist centres and applied projects. Explain why each choice fits the same goal. Ranking alone is weak evidence of fit, and generic descriptions copied from course pages do not show judgment.

Prepare university applications in parallel

The scholarship form does not apply to universities for you. Build a tracker for entry requirements, deposits, English conditions, references and deadlines. An unconditional offer must be ready by the Chevening offer deadline if you progress.

Common mistakes to avoid

Counting work experience acquired before the undergraduate degree was completed.
Submitting three duplicate course choices or an ineligible course.
Writing vague leadership claims without a decision, action and result.
Describing networking as collecting contacts rather than building purposeful, reciprocal relationships.
Proposing a career plan with no realistic role, sector, timeline or benefit for Nepal.
Using an agent-written or recycled application that does not sound like the applicant.
Waiting until the closing day, when the portal may be busy and no late application is accepted.
