UK Student Visa Funds: Acceptable and Unacceptable Evidence
For a UK Student visa, having enough money is only part of the requirement. The funds must come from an accepted source, remain available for the required period and be shown through evidence that meets Appendix Finance. This guide explains the practical difference between acceptable and unacceptable evidence for applicants from Nepal, using rules updated on 1 July 2026 and checked on 24 July 2026.
Quick answer: The strongest evidence is normally money held as cash in a regulated personal bank account that allows immediate access, an eligible parent or legal guardian account with relationship proof and written consent, qualifying official financial sponsorship, or a compliant student loan. Overdrafts, credit cards, cryptocurrency, shares, property valuations and money held by an ordinary third party are not acceptable substitutes.
How much money must you show?
The financial requirement normally combines any unpaid first-year tuition shown on the CAS with living costs. Appendix Student lists living costs of £1,529 per month in London and £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. Tuition already paid can reduce the amount only when it is recorded on the CAS or supported in the way the rules permit.
Money relying on bank evidence normally has to be held for a continuous 28-day period. The closing balance date on the most recent evidence must fall within 31 days before the application date. Do not calculate from an appointment date, biometrics date or expected decision date.
Acceptable sources of funds
| Source | What makes it acceptable | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Your own bank account | Cash is held in a regulated account in your name and can be accessed immediately. | Bank statement, passbook, certificate of deposit or bank letter containing the required account details and dates. |
| Parent or legal guardian account | The account otherwise meets Appendix Finance and the money is genuinely available to you. | Compliant bank evidence, relationship proof and a signed consent letter. |
| Official financial sponsorship | The sponsor falls within an accepted official category and confirms the support. | CAS endorsement or official sponsor letter with the required details. |
| Qualifying student loan | The loan is from an eligible government, government-sponsored scheme, regulated bank or regulated academic loan scheme and is available for study. | A compliant loan letter issued within six months of the application. |
| Permitted combination | Each source independently satisfies its own evidence rules and the combined available total covers the requirement. | A clear calculation plus the correct evidence for every source. |
Your own cash account
A current, savings or deposit account can qualify when the funds are cash and immediately accessible. The financial institution must be regulated, use electronic record keeping and be capable of satisfactory verification by UK Visas and Immigration. Evidence should identify the account holder, account number, financial institution, relevant transaction or balance dates and the amount held.
Money held by a parent or legal guardian
Appendix Finance permits a Student applicant to rely on a parent or legal guardian’s account. You must also prove the relationship and provide written consent confirming that the money can be used for the application and UK study. An unrelated relative, family friend or agent does not become an accepted account holder merely by signing a sponsorship promise.
See the detailed parents’ bank statement guide before preparing this route.
Official sponsorship
Official financial sponsorship is different from informal family support. It may come from His Majesty’s Government, the applicant’s home government, the British Council, an international organisation, an international company, a university or a UK independent school. The letter or CAS entry must clearly state the sponsor, applicant, duration and amount or scope of support. If the sponsorship does not cover the full requirement, the remaining amount needs separate qualifying evidence.
A compliant student loan
A loan letter must be dated no more than six months before the application and confirm the applicant, loan amount, provider and that the money is available before travel or paid directly to the sponsor before travel. Where funds are released only after arrival, the rule contains a limited exception for certain government loans. Do not assume an approval email, collateral valuation or general sanction document contains every required confirmation.

Funds and evidence that are not acceptable
| Evidence or asset | Why it fails | Safer action |
|---|---|---|
| Overdraft facility | Borrowing available as an overdraft is expressly excluded. | Use cleared qualifying cash or a compliant student loan. |
| Credit card or credit limit | A card limit is credit, not cash held in an eligible account. | Do not count it in the funds calculation. |
| Stocks, shares, bonds or cryptocurrency | These are investments whose value and accessibility do not meet the cash-account rule. | Realise them lawfully into a qualifying account early enough to complete the 28-day period. |
| Property or land valuation | Asset ownership is not immediately accessible cash. | Use it only for a separate, legitimate loan process; submit qualifying cash or loan evidence for the visa. |
| Future salary or expected business income | Expected money is not already held for the required period. | Apply after the actual funds have qualified. |
| Ordinary third-party account | Accounts of siblings, uncles, friends or agents are not automatically permitted. | Move genuine funds transparently to an accepted account and allow sufficient time. |
| Unregulated or unverifiable institution | UKVI may reject evidence where the institution lacks regulation, electronic records or satisfactory verification. | Use an established regulated institution and retain verifiable originals. |
| Restricted or non-accessible product | Funds must be under the applicant’s control and immediately accessible. | Confirm withdrawal terms before starting the 28-day period. |
Foreign-currency evidence from Nepal
You may show qualifying money in Nepalese rupees. Appendix Finance says foreign currency is converted to pounds sterling using the OANDA spot exchange rate on the application date. Because rates move, keep a sensible buffer rather than targeting the exact minimum. A balance that passed yesterday can fall below the requirement when converted on the day of application.
Keep the bank’s contact details clear and use consistent English spellings across the passport, CAS, relationship documents and bank records. An unexplained large deposit is not automatically prohibited by the 28-day rule, but it can trigger credibility, source-of-funds or university compliance questions. Retain sale deeds, income records, loan disbursement records or transfer trails where relevant.
Five-step evidence check before submission
- Read the CAS: identify unpaid tuition and check whether qualifying payments are recorded.
- Calculate the requirement: add the correct London or outside-London maintenance amount and include a currency buffer.
- Confirm the source: use only your account, an eligible parent or guardian account, official sponsorship, a qualifying loan or a permitted combination.
- Check the dates: verify every day of the continuous 28-day period and ensure the closing evidence date is within 31 days of applying.
- Audit the document: confirm names, account number, institution, dates, balance, accessibility, translations and supporting consent or relationship evidence.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use several bank accounts?
Yes, qualifying sources can be combined, but every account must satisfy the applicable ownership, accessibility, date and evidence rules. Present a clear total and avoid unnecessary complexity.
Can I use my uncle’s account?
Not as an ordinary third-party bank account. The parent or legal-guardian provision does not extend automatically to other relatives. Consider a transparent transfer to an accepted account early enough to complete the holding period.
Does a fixed deposit qualify?
It can qualify only when the funds are cash, immediately accessible and evidenced through an eligible institution. A product locked against withdrawal or accessible only at a future date is risky.
Is a bank balance certificate enough?
Only if it demonstrates all required facts. A one-day balance certificate that does not prove the continuous 28-day period will not establish the holding requirement by itself.
Should I submit extra documents?
Submit what the route, application form, university and your circumstances require. Extra material that is inconsistent, unverifiable or unexplained can create problems rather than solve them.
