Commonwealth Scholarship for Nepali Students

Commonwealth Scholarships are well known across South Asia, but eligibility is programme-specific and changes with the country list. For the 2026–27 Commonwealth Master’s and Commonwealth Shared Scholarship rounds, Nepal is not included in the official eligible-country lists. A Nepali passport alone therefore does not make an applicant eligible for those current schemes. This guide is based on Commonwealth Scholarship Commission information checked on 24 July 2026.

Quick answer: Nepali students should not submit or pay anyone to submit a 2026–27 Commonwealth Master’s or Shared Scholarship application in Nepal’s name. The official lists do not include Nepal, and the CSC states that if a country is not listed for a programme, applicants from that country cannot apply to that programme. Recheck the CSC country filter when a new cycle opens because programme and country eligibility can change.

Being a Commonwealth citizen is not the same as being eligible for every Commonwealth Scholarship. The CSC funds multiple programmes under different development and funding rules. A social-media list, old blog or previous Nepal nomination notice cannot override the current official programme page.

What the Commonwealth Master’s route normally involves

Understanding the route is still useful if Nepal becomes eligible in a future round or if an applicant has qualifying citizenship and residence under a listed country. The agency-nominated Master’s programme supports full-time taught master’s study at an approved UK university and focuses on sustainable development.

For the 2026–27 cycle, the published baseline included citizenship or refugee status and permanent residence in an eligible country, availability to start in September 2026, a first degree normally equivalent to at least a UK 2:1 or a lower second plus a relevant postgraduate qualification, inability to afford UK study without the award and complete supporting documents.

Applicants do not apply directly to the CSC alone. They must use CSC Central and also apply through an approved nominator, whose deadline and additional criteria can differ. A nomination does not guarantee selection.

These figures explain the programme structure; they do not create eligibility for Nepal. Never build a financial plan around an award until the relevant country list, application route and final offer are confirmed.

How to verify a future cycle correctly

Start with the CSC country filter: select the country and note which programmes appear.
Open the exact programme page: check degree level, eligible countries, dates and whether applications are open.
Identify the application route: agency nomination, university nomination and direct system steps are different.
Check both deadlines: a nominator or university may close before the CSC system.
Save the published criteria: eligibility and evidence must match the cycle for which you apply.
Apply for university admission separately: the scholarship application normally does not replace the course application.

Documents usually expected when a route is open

The 2026–27 Master’s guidance required proof of eligible citizenship or refugee status, full higher-education transcripts with certified translations where necessary and at least two qualifying references uploaded in the specified format. The form also examines academic merit, the quality of the study or research proposal and potential development impact.

A strong development-impact statement moves from a defined national or local problem to the skills the proposed course provides, specific post-study actions, realistic beneficiaries and measurable change. It should explain why the UK course is necessary and how the applicant will return and contribute, rather than promising broad transformation with no delivery plan.

Safer alternatives for Nepali students now

Chevening: Nepal is an eligible country, and the published 2027–28 round opens on 4 August 2026 for eligible postgraduate applicants.
University merit scholarships: many universities offer automatic or competitive tuition discounts to international applicants, including Nepali students.
Need-based undergraduate awards: schemes such as UCL Global Undergraduate and university-specific international funds use their own criteria.
Course and faculty awards: search the official funding page for the exact programme, department and entry year.
Research funding: funded PhD projects and doctoral studentships are advertised separately from taught-course scholarships.

Fraud and misinformation warning

The CSC does not charge applicants to use its scholarship application system. Treat any person promising a “reserved Commonwealth quota,” paid nomination, guaranteed award or secret Nepal application link as a red flag. Verify the domain, current country list and nominator details yourself. Do not send passport copies, bank details or payments through unofficial forms.
