London vs Outside London Student Cost Comparison 2026

London usually requires a larger student budget, especially for rent and transport, but “outside London” is not one price category. Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, Cardiff and smaller cities have different housing markets and course patterns. This comparison uses current official information checked on 24 July 2026 and separates visa evidence from real spending.

That is a difference of £358 per month or £3,222 across nine months. It is a visa calculation, not a prediction of actual costs. King’s College London estimates an average London budget of £1,770 per month for 2026/27, while Cambridge estimates £1,305 per month; Oxford estimates £1,405–£2,105. University methodologies differ, so compare the exact city and accommodation rather than applying one national average.

What counts as London for the Student visa?

GOV.UK defines London as the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. A university’s marketing address or distance from central London is not the test. Check the main study location and current visa guidance. A campus outside the defined area uses the outside-London rate even if it is within commuting distance, subject to the official rules.

These figures use different categories, contract lengths and survey methods. They should not be ranked as if they were identical quotes. Their main lesson is that some high-demand cities outside London can cost more than the outside-London visa minimum.

Where the London premium often appears

  • Rent: rooms near central campuses and transport hubs can be expensive.
  • Transport: commuting across zones creates a regular cost; walking distance may justify higher rent for some students.
  • Temporary accommodation: a late housing search can add hotel or short-let expense.
  • Social spending: entertainment prices can be higher, although student discounts and free activities are extensive.
  • Up-front housing: advance rent can be significant where an international student lacks a UK guarantor.

Costs that may be similar anywhere

Visa and health charges, most devices, academic software and flights from Nepal are not automatically cheaper outside London. Grocery differences may be smaller than rent differences. A specialist course can also cost more in a lower-rent city than a classroom course in London. Compare the total offer, not city rent alone.

Accommodation is the key comparison

For each offer, collect three real housing options and record weekly rent, contract weeks, bills, deposit, advance rent and travel to campus. Convert weekly rent correctly:

Monthly equivalent = weekly rent × 52 ÷ 12.

A £200 weekly room is about £867 per month, not £800. Also compare the whole contract because a cheaper weekly room over 52 weeks can cost more than a slightly higher 40-week university contract.

London may still be the right choice

A London course can make sense when it offers a distinctive specialisation, relevant professional network, placements, research facilities or personal support that clearly fits the applicant. The decision should show why those benefits justify the net cost. Do not choose London only for its name, and do not reject it only because the visa-maintenance figure is higher.

Outside London is not automatically affordable

Oxford’s 2026/27 estimate of £1,405–£2,105 per month overlaps and can exceed the London visa figure. Cambridge estimates £1,305, also above the outside-London visa minimum. A city labelled “outside London” can still have limited housing supply. Research the exact campus and contract before using a generic regional budget.
