GRE 315 to 325 Improvement Plan

Define 325 in a programme context. Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are reported separately, and Analytical Writing has its own score. A computer science applicant and a literature applicant may need different profiles even when both discuss a 325 total. Check the current department policy and any published cohort data. Do not sacrifice a relevant strong measure merely to create a more symmetrical score split.

Analyse the last valid evidence at question level. Use an unseen timed POWERPREP simulation, or the ETS GRE Diagnostic Service after an official test, to identify skill areas, difficulty and time spent. Separate wrong answers from slow correct answers, guesses and changed-to-wrong decisions. At this level, one broad label such as careless is not useful. Record the exact trigger: missed qualifier, weak inference, inefficient setup, over-calculation or unsupported elimination.

Protect first-section accuracy without trying to manipulate the adaptive design. ETS explains that Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are section-level adaptive: performance on the first section determines the difficulty of the second section for that measure, and scaled scoring accounts for section difficulty. Practise steady accuracy, skip and mark expensive items, and return while time remains. A rushed first section can be more damaging than leaving a difficult item for review.

In advanced Quant work, focus on translation, constraints, alternate solution paths, estimation and data interpretation rather than collecting formulas. Compare two methods and learn when the answer choices or Quantitative Comparison structure can simplify the task. In advanced Verbal, justify every completion from sentence logic and every reading answer from specific passage evidence. Difficult vocabulary matters, but precision about tone, scope and inference often separates close choices.

Keep Analytical Writing in the plan. A higher V+Q total does not replace the separately reported Issue score. Practise developing a defensible position, choosing relevant reasons and examples, organising the response and reviewing serious errors within 30 minutes. Ask for feedback on logic and development, not only grammar. Programme expectations should determine how much weekly time this measure receives.
