GRE Reschedule Cancellation and Refund Guide
Act through the ETS account before the official deadline and verify the live fee, refund and appointment details before submitting.
A change is complete only when ETS confirms the new status
Do not rely on a phone note, payment alert or an unsubmitted screen. Review the official record after every appointment change.
First decide whether the student needs a different date or no longer plans to test. Rescheduling keeps the registration but moves the appointment, subject to availability, the applicable deadline and fee. Cancellation ends the appointment and may qualify for a partial refund only when completed by the official deadline. A student who simply does not attend should not expect the same treatment as a timely cancellation.
ETS currently states that a General Test appointment must be rescheduled no later than four days before the test date in most locations, with a ten-day deadline in Mainland China. The same timing applies to cancellation eligibility. ETS gives the example that a Saturday appointment must be changed by Tuesday under the four-day rule. Because time zones and local dates can create confusion, act earlier and use the deadline shown in the account and current Bulletin.
The live ETS fee page currently lists a rescheduling fee for areas outside China and a separate charge for changing a test centre. These amounts can change without notice, and taxes or payment-service conditions may apply by jurisdiction. Read the checkout summary before confirming. Do not repeat an old rupee conversion or assume the official GRE registration fee includes later changes. Save both the original and updated receipts.
For a cancellation completed by the applicable deadline, ETS states that the refund equals half of the original test fee. Other products and services may not be refundable under the same rule. If the deadline is missed, the registration fee can be forfeited. Refund timing and exchange-rate effects can depend on the payment method and provider, so retain the transaction record and contact official ETS support when the account status or refund does not match the published policy.
A rescheduled test must remain within one year of the original appointment date, and a GRE General Test registration cannot be exchanged for a Subject Test registration. Students should also check the retake rule when the change follows a completed attempt: the General Test can be taken once every 21 days and up to five times in a rolling 12-month period. A cancellation does not automatically create a safe new application timeline.
MKS Education can help rebuild the preparation calendar around a changed date through an eight-week guided course, six-month access and continued support. Physical, online and hybrid students receive recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice and physical books. Students needing more repetition may join multiple suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. MKS cannot change an ETS appointment, control a refund or guarantee a result.
Diagnose first
Use an official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Writing errors before choosing weekly priorities.
Match the goal
Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and funding deadlines.
Verify claims
Use ETS and official university pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.
Turn the comparison into checks you can verify
Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Current appointment | The exact date controls every deadline. | ETS account confirmation and time zone. |
| Reschedule deadline | Late changes can forfeit the fee. | Usually four days before the test. |
| China exception | A different official rule applies. | Ten-day deadline in Mainland China. |
| Rescheduling fee | A change is not free. | Live ETS fee page and checkout. |
| Centre change | May carry a separate official charge. | Available location and current fee. |
| Cancellation deadline | Determines refund eligibility. | Complete by the applicable official deadline. |
| Refund amount | Only part of the registration may return. | Half of the original test fee when eligible. |
| Other services | Refund rules may differ. | Materials service and payment terms. |
| One-year limit | A registration cannot move indefinitely. | New date within one year of original appointment. |
| Test type | Registrations are not interchangeable. | General Test versus Subject Test. |
| Confirmation | A click or card alert is not enough. | Updated ETS status email and receipt. |
| Application buffer | The new date must still fit deadlines. | Score availability delivery and matching time. |

Practical next steps
- Open the exact appointment in the student-owned ETS account.
- Check the current deadline fee refund rule and available new dates.
- Review all details before confirming the change or cancellation.
- Save the updated confirmation receipt and application timeline.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not wait until the four-day deadline if an earlier action is possible.
- Do not assume a missed appointment receives a partial refund.
- Do not exchange a General Test registration for a Subject Test.
- Do not trust a fee or exchange-rate figure copied from an old blog.
