GRE General Test Format and Question Types

Analytical Writing is the first section. ETS currently gives one Analyze an Issue task and 30 minutes to plan, write and review the response. The task measures the ability to express complex ideas clearly, support a position with relevant reasons and examples, organise a focused discussion and control standard written English. A memorised essay cannot replace direct engagement with the actual issue. Practice should include outlining, choosing useful examples, developing paragraphs and reserving a final check for serious errors.

Verbal Reasoning follows in two sections that may appear before or after the Quantitative sections. ETS describes Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence as the main question families. Students may need to select one answer, select more than one answer or complete several blanks. The work tests passage structure, inference, vocabulary in context, relationships among ideas and evidence-based elimination. Learning definitions alone is therefore incomplete; vocabulary must be connected to sentence logic and reading decisions.

Quantitative Reasoning also has two sections. Its content draws on arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, and its formats include Quantitative Comparison, multiple-choice questions with one or more correct answers, Numeric Entry and data-interpretation sets. The on-screen calculator is available, but it should support rather than replace mathematical reasoning. Students need to translate wording, identify constraints, compare quantities, estimate, choose an efficient method and check whether the response format permits one or several selections.

The two Verbal sections and the two Quantitative sections are section-level adaptive. The first section of each measure is of average difficulty, and overall performance on it affects the difficulty of the second section in that measure. Scoring considers both correct answers across the two sections and the section difficulty. This is not question-by-question adaptation. A sound plan treats every item carefully, builds first-section accuracy and avoids trying to manipulate the route through guesses or excessive time on one difficult question.

The computer-delivered interface supports flexible movement within the section currently open. Students can preview and review, mark a question, skip and return, and change an answer while section time remains. ETS advises answering every Verbal and Quant question because incorrect answers do not subtract points. Use POWERPREP to practise these controls, the on-screen calculator and the timing. Do not assume that familiarity with a paper question set transfers automatically to the live interface.

Students needing more repetition may join multiple suitable classes without another class charge, subject to the current schedule and seats.
