How Long to Prepare for a 320 GRE Score
A 320 target needs a baseline, section priorities and weekly capacity—not a universal promise about weeks.
The score gap matters more than the calendar headline
A responsible plan treats 320 as a working target, not a guarantee, and changes the test date when fresh evidence shows the student is not ready.
Define the target correctly. A total of 320 can result from different Verbal and Quantitative combinations, while Analytical Writing is reported separately. An engineering programme may value Quantitative evidence differently from a humanities or policy programme, and every department can change whether GRE scores are required, optional or considered. Check the official programme page before investing months in a number that may not match the actual application priority.
Take an official-format baseline under realistic timing. POWERPREP is designed to familiarise students with the content, question types, calculator, movement within a section and timed experience. Record the Verbal and Quantitative scores, complete an Issue essay, and classify every error. A baseline distorted by pausing, translation help, copied questions or advance answer exposure cannot estimate preparation time reliably.
Measure four gaps: concept knowledge, language and reading, test process, and consistency. Quant students may need arithmetic, algebra, geometry or data-analysis review; Verbal students may need vocabulary in context, sentence logic, reading structure and inference. Both measures require response-format accuracy and section timing. Writing needs position development, reasons, examples, organisation and controlled English. A student with one concentrated gap may progress faster than one with several foundational gaps.
Estimate weekly capacity honestly. Ten focused hours are not the same as ten passive video hours. A useful week combines concept lessons, targeted questions, vocabulary and reading, an essay or outline, timed work and reviewed errors. College exams, jobs, commutes and application tasks reduce reliable capacity. Choose a schedule the student can repeat. ETS notes that plans depend on the time available and learning preferences, so the calendar should reflect the person rather than a marketing claim.
Use milestones instead of waiting for the final mock. Every two weeks, compare fresh accuracy by question family, time spent, repeated errors and section completion. Near the test, use a new official timed POWERPREP test and judge the complete score profile, not one favourite section. Improvement must be repeatable across unseen questions. If the evidence remains far from the programme target, extend preparation or reconsider the appointment before the official change deadline.
MKS Education offers an eight-week guided GRE course with six-month access and continued support. Physical, online and hybrid students receive recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice and physical books. Students needing more repetition may join multiple suitable classes without another class charge, subject to current timetables and seats. These features increase access to practice and feedback but do not guarantee a 320 score, admission, scholarship or assistantship.
Diagnose first
Use an official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Writing errors before choosing weekly priorities.
Match the goal
Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and funding deadlines.
Verify claims
Use ETS and official university pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.
Turn the comparison into checks you can verify
Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Programme target | A total alone may hide section priorities. | Official GRE policy and preferred profile. |
| Timed baseline | Shows the starting score and process. | Fresh POWERPREP under realistic conditions. |
| Quant gap | Foundations and reasoning affect speed. | Arithmetic algebra geometry and data analysis. |
| Verbal gap | Vocabulary alone is insufficient. | Sentence logic reading evidence and inference. |
| Writing gap | Reported separately from the total. | Issue development organisation and control. |
| Weekly hours | Consistency determines usable practice volume. | Focused repeatable schedule. |
| Error review | Wrong and slow answers show different needs. | Cause correction and retest. |
| Two-week milestone | Early evidence prevents wasted months. | Accuracy timing and repeated-error trend. |
| Official mock | Validates the full current format. | New timed POWERPREP attempt. |
| Application buffer | A late test creates reporting risk. | 8–10 day score window plus delivery. |
| Retake option | Contingency requires time. | 21-day rule and application deadline. |
| Decision point | Targets are not guarantees. | Proceed extend or reschedule from evidence. |
What makes the MKS GRE learning system different
The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.
Physical online and hybrid
Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.
Recordings in every mode
Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.
iOS and Android practice
Use structured GRE practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.
Physical books
Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official ETS resources.
Eight weeks plus six months
Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.
Multiple suitable classes
Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.
Practical next steps
- Verify the programme’s current GRE policy and section priorities.
- Take a fresh timed POWERPREP baseline and classify every error.
- Build a repeatable weekly schedule with two-week milestones.
- Use a second official timed test to decide whether the date is realistic.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not treat 320 as the same profile for every graduate programme.
- Do not estimate duration from an untimed or previously seen diagnostic.
- Do not count passive watching as equivalent to reviewed practice.
- Do not keep an unsuitable test date simply to protect a promise.
Prepare for the GRE General Test students now take
ETS lists one 30-minute Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections in the shorter computer-delivered General Test.
Analytical Writing
One 30-minute Analyze an Issue task assesses clear ideas, reasons, examples, organisation and written control.
Verbal Reasoning
Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 18 and 23 minutes respectively.
Quantitative Reasoning
Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 21 and 26 minutes respectively.
Build your GRE plan from diagnostic evidence
Bring target programmes, the earliest deadline and a recent official-format diagnostic. MKS can organise an eight-week guided plan with flexible modes, recordings, app practice, books, six-month access and continued support.
Verify current GRE information
Can I prepare for a 320 GRE score in two months?
Two months can provide a useful eight-week structure, but feasibility depends on the timed baseline, section gaps, weekly capacity and programme priorities. It is not a guarantee.
How many months do most students prepare for the GRE?
ETS study advice says most test takers prepare for one to three months, while also stressing that the plan depends on available time and learning preferences.
What diagnostic should I use before planning?
Use a fresh official POWERPREP test under realistic conditions and record section scores, timing, question types and error causes.
Is a 320 GRE score good for every programme?
No single total is best for every programme. Verify the current policy and the relative importance of Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing for each target.
Does MKS guarantee a 320 GRE score?
No. MKS provides structured teaching, practice, recordings, apps, books and support, but cannot guarantee an official score or admission outcome.
