Programme fit matters more than one total

Good GRE Score for US Universities

A good score is one that supports the verified programme profile and the rest of the application, not a universal number.

Define good at the programme level

US graduate admissions vary by university, school, department, degree and intake. A generic cutoff copied from another programme can misdirect preparation.

Start with test-use policy. Some US programmes require the GRE, some make it optional, some accept it as one component and some do not use it. Policies can change by intake and may differ between departments within the same university. Read the official programme admissions page, not only a university-wide graduate page, and record the date checked, application deadline and any separate funding instruction.

Interpret the three reported measures separately. Verbal and Quantitative scores each use a 130–170 scale in one-point increments. Analytical Writing uses a 0–6 scale in half-point increments. A simple V+Q total hides the profile. Engineering, analytics and economics programmes may examine Quantitative evidence closely, while humanities, policy or communication-heavy fields may place different weight on Verbal and Writing. The official programme decides relevance.

Use percentile ranks carefully. ETS includes percentile information and publishes current interpretive data, but a percentile describes performance relative to a reference group, not the chance of admission. Percentile ranks can change when the reference population changes even when the scaled score represents approximately the same level of performance. Compare the measure with the intended field and programme evidence rather than calling one percentile universally safe.

Look for official programme evidence such as a minimum, recommended score, recent class profile or statement that no minimum exists. Distinguish a formal eligibility threshold from a competitive range. If the page provides no number, do not invent one from rankings or forums. Contact the official admissions office with a specific question, and remember that faculty review may consider transcripts, research, recommendations, statement, experience and English proficiency alongside GRE results.

Set the preparation target from the largest relevant gap. A student should not chase extra Quant points if the programme already views that measure as strong while Verbal, Writing or application evidence remains weak. Conversely, a technical programme may benefit from stronger Quant evidence. Use a current-format POWERPREP baseline, plan realistic milestones and keep an application buffer for the official score availability and institutional matching process.

MKS Education can connect programme research to an eight-week guided plan, six-month access and continued support. Physical, online and hybrid students receive recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice and physical books. Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. MKS cannot guarantee a good score, admission, scholarship, assistantship or visa outcome.

Diagnose first

Use an official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Writing errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and funding deadlines.

Verify claims

Use ETS and official university pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

MKS Education: MKS can help students separate programme research from preparation, set section-level priorities and avoid treating a generic total as an admission promise.
Connected preparation

What makes the MKS GRE learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GRE practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official ETS resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Check the exact official programme and intake policy.
  • Record Verbal Quantitative and Writing expectations separately.
  • Use current ETS percentile and field data as context only.
  • Set the target from programme fit and a fresh POWERPREP baseline.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not copy a score requirement from a different department.
  • Do not confuse a minimum with a competitive admitted profile.
  • Do not use percentile rank as an admission probability.
  • Do not assume a high GRE score compensates for every weak application item.
Current test context

Prepare for the GRE General Test students now take

ETS lists one 30-minute Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections in the shorter computer-delivered General Test.

Analytical Writing

One 30-minute Analyze an Issue task assesses clear ideas, reasons, examples, organisation and written control.

Verbal Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 18 and 23 minutes respectively.

Quantitative Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 21 and 26 minutes respectively.

What is a good GRE score for US universities?

There is no universal score. A useful score matches the exact programme policy, relevant section expectations and the strength of the complete application.

Is 320 a good GRE score for the USA?

It may be useful for some programmes and unsuitable for others. Check the Verbal and Quantitative split, Writing score and official programme evidence.

Do all US universities require the GRE?

No. Policies differ by university, department, degree and intake and can change, so verify the current official programme page.

Should I compare GRE percentiles?

Percentiles add context, but they are not admission probabilities and can change with the reference population. Use them with programme-specific evidence.

Can MKS guarantee admission with a target score?

No. MKS can organise preparation and programme-fit planning, but cannot guarantee an official score or any admission outcome.
