GRE Preparation for PhD Study in the USA

Start with the department, not a general university ranking. Identify the doctoral programme, research groups, faculty interests, prerequisite coursework, degree expectations and application route. Save the exact official pages and note whether contacting faculty is invited, optional or discouraged. EducationUSA recommends researching graduate options early and checking institutional and departmental requirements, which can differ significantly across US universities.

Read the GRE policy without assumptions. Some doctoral programmes require scores, some permit applicants to submit them, some describe them as optional and others do not review them. A policy from a master’s programme or a different department is not transferable. Record whether a Subject Test is mentioned separately, whether all attempts must be reported and whether the programme publishes any section-level guidance. Recheck the rule for the intended intake.

Connect section goals to the research field. Quantitative Reasoning may provide useful common evidence for mathematics-intensive disciplines; Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing may matter differently in reading, argument and communication-heavy areas. The department decides how evidence is used. ETS advises holistic interpretation and warns against relying on one cut score as the sole decision criterion. Do not convert a percentile into an admission probability.

Take a current POWERPREP simulation under realistic conditions. Analyse accuracy, timing and reasoning for each section, and obtain individual review of the 30-minute Issue response. Build an error log that distinguishes concept, interpretation, vocabulary, passage evidence, calculation, pacing and written-argument weaknesses. Eight guided weeks should include concept repair, targeted sets, timed sections, full simulations and review rather than a sequence of unexamined mock scores.

Create a doctoral application calendar with a separate funding column. Assistantships, fellowships and faculty-funded roles can have earlier or separate procedures, and availability can change. Track the application deadline, funding priority date, official score deadline, recommendations, statement or research proposal, writing sample, CV, transcripts and English-proficiency evidence. ETS currently reports official scores in 8–10 days, but a responsible plan adds delivery and institutional matching time.
