Set section priorities from the field and the complete file. ETS reports Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning on separate 130–170 scales and Analytical Writing on a 0–6 scale. A combined V+Q total can hide the measure most relevant to the programme. Review any official minimum, recommendation or published cohort information, but do not invent a target where the department provides none. ETS advises score users to consider GRE results with the other evidence in an applicant’s file.
Use a current-format POWERPREP test as the baseline. The computer-delivered GRE General Test takes about one hour and 58 minutes and contains one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task plus two sections each of Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning. Classify wrong, slow, guessed and unfinished questions by skill and cause. The first plan should concentrate on the two or three gaps most likely to improve the relevant section profile while maintaining stronger areas.
Build the calendar backward. ETS currently says official scores are available in the test-taker account 8–10 days after the test, and score-report processing and university matching also need time. Leave a practical buffer before the earliest programme or funding deadline. Complete transcripts, recommendations, statement drafts, credential instructions and English testing in parallel; GRE preparation should not delay application components that the department also evaluates.
