GRE Data Interpretation Preparation Course
Read the structure of the data first, calculate only what the question requires and verify that the result matches the units and scale.
Interpret before calculating
Many data errors begin before arithmetic: the student reads the wrong category, ignores a unit, assumes a zero baseline or answers a different comparison.
Start with display reading. Identify the title, population or categories, axes, scales, unit of measurement, legend, date range and any clarifying note. ETS recommends scanning the presentation briefly rather than studying every value in detail. The question determines which rows, bars, points or sectors matter. Marking the requested quantities before calculation prevents a correct computation using the wrong data.
Learn the official content boundary. GRE data analysis can include mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, interquartile range, quartiles and percentiles; tables and common graphs; elementary probability; conditional probability; random variables and distributions including the normal distribution; and counting methods such as combinations, permutations and Venn diagrams. ETS states that inferential statistics is not tested, so an effective course focuses on tested high-school and introductory-statistics ideas.
Use ratios, percentages and weighted thinking carefully. Distinguish percentage points from percentage change, part-to-whole from part-to-part ratios and averages from totals. Check whether categories overlap before adding them. For weighted means, identify both value and weight. For probability, define the sample space and determine whether events are independent, mutually exclusive or conditional rather than applying a memorised formula without matching the situation.
Treat the visual scale as data. Bar and line graphs can use broken axes or nonzero baselines, while titles may express values in thousands, millions or billions. Scatterplots describe association but do not automatically prove causation. Boxplots and frequency distributions require attention to how the display is defined. Use estimation to catch magnitude errors, but give the exact answer when the question does not instruct rounding and the response format requires it.
Practise sets as a connected workflow. Several questions can refer to the same display, but each still has its own task and response format. Use the shared understanding without carrying an earlier assumption into a later question. Review wrong, guessed and slow responses by cause: display reading, concept, model, calculation, units, format or timing. Then complete a fresh set using the corrected process before moving to a full timed section.
