Complete the meaning before trusting the vocabulary

These question types reward sentence reasoning supported by precise vocabulary, not a search for the most impressive-looking word.

Start by diagnosing the cause of each error. Separate unknown vocabulary from wrong connotation, missed contrast or continuation clues, grammar mismatch, weak prediction, multi-blank interaction, pair-selection errors and timing. A student may know every option yet fail because the sentence relationship was misread. Another may identify the logic but lack the words needed to test the prediction. The study plan should treat those cases differently.

For Text Completion, read the whole passage for an overall sense before considering combinations. Mark structural words such as although, moreover, because, despite or therefore, and identify whether each blank should continue, contrast, qualify, explain or cause an idea. Predict a plain word or phrase, then compare the options. ETS notes that the first blank does not always need to be solved first; an easier blank can constrain the others.

Evaluate multi-blank completions as a connected whole. Each selected word must fit the local grammar and meaning, but the finished sentence or passage must also be logically, grammatically and stylistically coherent. If later blanks make no sense, reconsider the earlier choice. Text Completion gives one answer choice for each blank, and there is no partial credit when only some blanks are correct, so the final check matters.

For Sentence Equivalence, predict the sentence meaning before searching for a pair. Select two choices that each produce a coherent sentence and yield completed sentences with the same meaning. The two words do not have to be exact dictionary synonyms, and two apparent synonyms can both be wrong if they do not fit the context. Test each candidate in the original sentence and compare the overall outcomes rather than pairing words in isolation.

Build speed through repeatable decisions. Use small untimed sets to stabilise clue identification and prediction, then timed mixed sets that include both question families. Record why every attractive wrong choice fails: vocabulary, tone, grammar, logic, scope or paired meaning. Retest the corrected skill with fresh questions, and use official ETS samples and POWERPREP to check transfer under the current Verbal section timing and computer interface.

MKS Education can integrate sentence reasoning and vocabulary through physical, online or hybrid classes, recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice, physical books, eight guided weeks, six-month access and continued support. Students needing more repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to current schedules and seats. MKS cannot guarantee a Verbal score, admission, scholarship or assistantship.

Diagnose first

Use an official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Writing errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and funding deadlines.

Verify claims

Use ETS and official university pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

CheckWhy it mattersWhat to verify
Overall senseA blank depends on the whole message.Read the sentence or passage before choices.
Structural clueConnectors reveal the relationship.Contrast continuation cause qualification or example.
Plain predictionIt reduces attraction to distractors.Role and approximate meaning of the blank.
Grammar fitMeaning alone does not complete the sentence.Part of speech number and syntax.
ConnotationNear-synonyms can carry different tone.Positive negative neutral and intensity.
Blank orderThe first blank may not be easiest.Start where the context is strongest.
Whole-passage checkSelections interact across blanks.Logical grammatical and stylistic coherence.
Partial creditMulti-blank answers must be complete. All selected choices must be correct.
SE pairTwo options must create equivalent outcomes.Coherent sentences with the same meaning.
Loose synonymsDictionary similarity is insufficient.Test each word in the original context.
Timed setMethod must remain stable under pressure.Fresh mixed questions and pacing.
Error logAttractive distractors reveal the missing rule.Vocabulary tone grammar logic or pairing.
MKS Education: MKS can diagnose whether sentence questions fail through vocabulary, logic, grammar or timing, then assign recorded lessons, app retrieval, physical-book drills and fresh reviewed sets.
Connected preparation

What makes the MKS GRE learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GRE practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official ETS resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Read for overall meaning and mark structural clues.
  • Predict the blank role before examining choices.
  • Check every multi-blank completion as one coherent passage.
  • Require two Sentence Equivalence choices to create the same meaning.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not test every possible combination without a prediction.
  • Do not assume the first blank must be solved first.
  • Do not expect partial credit for a multi-blank Text Completion.
  • Do not select a Sentence Equivalence pair only because the words look synonymous.
Current test context

Prepare for the GRE General Test students now take

ETS lists one 30-minute Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections in the shorter computer-delivered General Test.

Analytical Writing

One 30-minute Analyze an Issue task assesses clear ideas, reasons, examples, organisation and written control.

Verbal Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 18 and 23 minutes respectively.

Quantitative Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 21 and 26 minutes respectively.

How many blanks can a GRE Text Completion have?

ETS describes Text Completion passages with one to three blanks, each requiring one selected answer choice.

Is there partial credit on multi-blank Text Completion?

No. All selected choices must be correct for credit on the question.

How many answers are selected in Sentence Equivalence?

You must select two choices that each complete the sentence coherently and produce completed sentences with the same meaning.

Do the two Sentence Equivalence words have to be synonyms?

Not necessarily. What matters is that both choices fit the context and make the completed sentences equivalent in meaning.

Does MKS guarantee a GRE Verbal score?

No. MKS provides teaching, practice and feedback, but cannot guarantee an official score, admission or funding.
