Learn the mechanism first. ETS states that the first Verbal and Quantitative sections are of average difficulty, and the second section difficulty for each measure depends on overall performance in the first section of that measure. Scoring considers the total number of correct answers across the two sections and the difficulty level of the sections. Students should not interpret the appearance of one difficult or easy question as proof of their route.

Distinguish section-level from question-level adaptation. Answering one item does not lock an immediate next-question route. Within the current section, students can skip, return, mark and change answers while time remains. This makes pacing and review decisions important: complete accessible questions, mark uncertain ones and return deliberately, rather than spending excessive time because a question seems important for adaptation.

Use a platform that matches current structure and tools. The mock should provide the current Verbal and Quant section counts and times, the correct response formats, a review screen and an on-screen calculator for Quant. POWERPREP is the official simulation reference. A third-party system can provide useful practice, but it should clearly state whether its routing and scoring are estimates and should not present reverse-engineered claims as official ETS logic.

Judge the mock by its review data. Record performance separately for the first and second sections, plus question type, content, time, confidence and cause. A harder second section can change raw impressions, so a simple percentage should not be marketed as an official scaled score. Use the result to identify learning priorities, compare repeated behaviours and plan an official POWERPREP checkpoint rather than to promise an exact test-day outcome.

Practise a two-pass section routine. In the first pass, answer questions with a reliable method and mark those requiring more work. In the second pass, return to marked or unanswered items, use estimation or elimination and answer every question because ETS says no points are subtracted for incorrect responses. Reserve a brief review window without repeatedly reopening stable answers. This routine should be tested in both Verbal and Quant sections.
