IELTS Writing Band Descriptors Explained for Nepali Students

Begin with the official scoring structure. IELTS examiners assess each Writing task independently across four criteria. The official Writing assessment resources explain task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. The criteria are equally weighted within a task, but Task 2 has more weight in the overall Writing result. Therefore, a strong vocabulary impression cannot cancel an incomplete response, and Task 1 practice cannot replace Task 2 development.

Task achievement or task response asks whether the writing fulfils the exact instruction. In Academic Task 1, this includes selecting key features, presenting an overview and supporting it with relevant detail. General Training Task 1 requires a clear purpose, suitable tone and coverage of all bullet points. Task 2 requires a clear relevant position, main ideas that are extended and supported, and appropriate task coverage. Count words, but do not mistake length for fulfilment. Diagnose missing requirements before editing individual sentences.

Coherence and cohesion concern the logical movement of information and the language that connects it. A reader should be able to identify the purpose of each paragraph and follow the relationship between ideas. Paragraphs, referencing, substitution and linking expressions should support progression rather than attract attention through repetition. A long list of connectors does not create coherence when ideas are undeveloped or poorly ordered. Outline the argument after writing; if the outline is confusing, revise the idea structure before adding more linking words.

Lexical resource is about range, precision, appropriacy, collocation, spelling and word formation. It does not require replacing every ordinary word with a rare synonym. Identify repeated vocabulary that genuinely limits meaning, then learn accurate alternatives in context. Grammatical range and accuracy consider the structures you use and how well you control them. Review sentence boundaries, clauses, articles, agreement, tense and punctuation. A useful complex sentence expresses a real relationship; complexity added only to impress can increase errors without improving communication.

Use the official Writing band descriptors as a comparison tool, not a self-scoring shortcut. Preserve the original response, label evidence for all four criteria and choose one high-impact revision in content or organisation plus one language correction. Rewrite, then complete a new task that demands the same skill. Track patterns across several scripts. Only a trained examiner awards the official score, so classroom estimates should guide learning rather than become promises.
