IELTS Writing Task 1 Preparation for Nepali Students

Confirm the module before practising. In official Academic Writing Task 1, candidates describe visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, processes or diagrams in their own words. Maps and plans also appear in official preparation resources. General Training candidates write a letter for a stated situation and audience. Both require at least 150 words, and official guidance recommends about 20 minutes so enough time remains for the more heavily weighted Task 2.

For Academic Task 1, analyse before typing. Identify units, time periods, categories, direction, scale and the most meaningful comparisons. Write a concise introduction by accurately restating the task, then provide a clear overview of the major pattern or stages. Organise details into logical groups rather than describing every value in the order it appears. Select enough precise evidence to support the overview without explaining causes that the visual does not provide or adding personal opinions.

Match the method to the visual. Line, bar, pie and table tasks usually need comparisons, highs, lows and significant changes. A process needs a logical sequence, start and end points, and accurate passive or active language where appropriate. A map or plan needs location, change and spatial relationships. For General Training letters, identify the purpose, recipient and required tone, cover every bullet point and make the request or explanation easy to follow. Do not force one fixed four-paragraph template onto every task.

Review through the official criteria. Task achievement asks whether the response fulfils the task, selects key features or covers letter requirements and stays relevant. Coherence and cohesion examine progression, paragraphing and controlled linking. Lexical resource rewards accurate, appropriate range rather than decorative synonyms. Grammatical range and accuracy require useful sentence variety with control. Use the official Writing band descriptors to identify one limiting pattern and one correction priority at a time.

Use an attempt-feedback-rewrite-new-task cycle. Write a complete response under a learning limit, preserve the original, receive criterion-based feedback and rewrite only after explaining each change. Then apply the same correction to an unfamiliar visual or letter. In timed practice, reserve a short planning window and a final check for units, comparisons, tense, articles, subject–verb agreement, spelling and minimum length. Progress is shown when the correction transfers without a teacher prompt, not when one polished rewrite looks better.
