Parents’ Bank Statement for UK Student Visa: Requirements
A Student visa applicant can rely on money held by a parent or legal guardian when the account and evidence satisfy Appendix Finance. The bank statement alone is not enough: the applicant must prove the relationship and provide written consent to use the money. This guide reflects rules updated on 1 July 2026 and checked on 24 July 2026.
Quick answer: Use a qualifying account in the name of a parent or legal guardian, hold the full required funds for 28 consecutive days where the cash-funds rule applies, ensure the latest financial evidence is dated within 31 days before the application, include acceptable relationship evidence and add a signed consent letter. The account must allow immediate access and be with a regulated, electronically recorded and verifiable institution.
Who can provide parent-account funds?
Appendix Finance permits a Student to rely on an account in the name of a parent or legal guardian. It does not create a general rule for any relative. A sibling, uncle, aunt, cousin, friend or ordinary private sponsor’s personal account is not automatically acceptable merely because they are willing to pay. A relative may transfer legitimately sourced money into a permitted account early enough to meet all requirements, but the transaction, source and university checks must be handled carefully.
Required document set
| Document | Purpose | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Parent’s financial evidence | Shows accessible funds and the required holding period | Correct account holder, institution, dates and uninterrupted balance. |
| Relationship evidence | Connects applicant to the parent or legal guardian | Names and translations must be consistent with passports and application. |
| Written consent | Confirms the applicant may use the money | Signed, clear and identifies parent, applicant and study purpose. |
| CAS and fee receipts | Establishes outstanding tuition | Payments and scholarship are recorded correctly. |
| Translation where required | Makes non-English evidence usable | Follow the current application translation instructions. |
Calculate the correct balance
For an applicant who must prove funds, start with outstanding course fees for one academic year on the CAS. Add maintenance of £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London for up to nine months under the current rule. A partial month is rounded up. Tuition already paid must be recorded on the CAS or evidenced in the permitted way.
The 28-day and 31-day rules
- The required balance must normally be held for 28 consecutive days.
- The most recent financial evidence must be dated within 31 days before the application.
- The period is counted back from the closing balance date on the latest evidence.
- The balance must not fall below the requirement during the period.
- Foreign currency is converted at the OANDA spot rate on the application date, so keep a buffer.
Do not count the day money arrives as proof that the full preceding period was satisfied. Build the calendar carefully and avoid withdrawals that break the minimum.
What should the consent letter say?
There is no need to invent a complicated legal declaration unless the university requests one. A clear signed letter should identify the parent or guardian, identify the applicant, state the relationship, refer to the account or available funds, and confirm unconditional consent for the applicant to use the money for UK tuition and living costs. Add date and reliable contact details. Ensure the wording matches the actual arrangement.
Account requirements
Appendix Finance allows personal current, deposit, savings and other qualifying accounts where funds are immediately accessible. It excludes funds where the decision maker cannot verify the institution, the institution is not appropriately regulated, or it lacks electronic record keeping. Shares, bonds, credit cards, overdrafts and pensions that cannot be withdrawn immediately are not acceptable cash evidence.
Can both parents’ accounts be used?
Permitted sources can be combined if every account and document satisfies the rules and the total remains sufficient throughout the required period. Prepare relationship and consent evidence for each relevant parent, keep calculations clear and avoid unnecessary complexity where one compliant source is sufficient.
Large recent deposits
A large deposit is not automatically prohibited by the 28-day rule once the full amount is held for the complete period, but the university may ask about source of funds during pre-CAS checks and UKVI can assess credibility or verify evidence. Keep lawful source records such as income, sale, savings or loan documentation as appropriate. Never create artificial statements or circular transactions.
Common refusal-risk mistakes
- Using an account belonging only to a non-parent relative.
- Missing birth or legal-guardian evidence.
- Missing or unsigned consent.
- Balance below the requirement for one day.
- Evidence dated too early.
- Currency conversion leaves a shortfall.
- Bank is unregulated or evidence cannot be verified.
- Names differ without explanation or translation.
- CAS tuition payments are wrong.
- Submitting altered or false evidence.
Parent-funds checklist
- Confirm the applicant must meet the financial requirement.
- Check final CAS tuition and study location.
- Calculate maintenance and add a currency buffer.
- Use a qualifying accessible parent account.
- Complete the 28-day period.
- Obtain evidence within the 31-day window.
- Add relationship proof and written consent.
- Check translations, names, dates and totals.
- Retain source-of-funds records and originals.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my uncle’s bank statement?
Not under the parent or legal-guardian account rule. Consider an acceptable funding route and obtain qualified advice for the actual circumstances.
Does the parent need to travel to the UK?
No. The rule concerns ownership, control, relationship and consent for the funds.
Is a consent letter alone enough?
No. It accompanies compliant financial evidence and relationship proof.
Can the parent withdraw money after application?
Funds should remain genuinely available. A substantial fall may be examined, and Appendix Student addresses limited spending on course-related costs. Avoid unnecessary withdrawals until a decision.
