Canada Online Study and PGWP Guide for Nepali Students 2027

Request the official program structure and mark each course as in-person, hybrid, synchronous online, asynchronous online, correspondence, practicum or overseas component. Record the credit value and the student’s physical location while completing it. A course accessed online from a Canadian home is not the same factual pattern as study completed from Nepal.

Calculate the distance-learning percentage from official credits or the school’s recognized measurement, not the number of calendar months or video calls. IRCC currently identifies completion of more than 50% of a program through distance learning as a general PGWP ineligibility ground, subject to the published special rules. Keep the calculation and source documents.

Confirm that the exact credential and DLI are PGWP eligible independently of delivery. A private partner teaching a public institution’s curriculum, a non-credit certificate, a language course or a program at a non-eligible DLI cannot borrow eligibility simply because some classes occur on a public campus or use a Canadian learning platform.

IRCC’s current eligibility page says a graduate is not eligible after completing over half of the study program through distance learning, including online courses, e-learning or correspondence. A student close to the threshold should obtain a written audit before registering, dropping, retaking or substituting a course because one change can alter the percentage.

Study completed online from outside Canada after the pandemic transition receives additional treatment and can be deducted from the length of a future PGWP. Historic temporary policies apply only to defined dates and applicants. A student beginning in 2026 or 2027 should not rely on a pandemic-era article or another graduate’s exception.

An overseas component can receive different treatment when it is an approved part of a Canadian program and earns Canadian-school credit, but IRCC may limit the PGWP to time studied in Canada. Ask the DLI for the program agreement, credit confirmation and required location, then compare it to current federal guidance before travel.

Maintain the DLI’s required full-time status during each academic semester except a permitted final-semester situation or another published special case. An online course load can be academically full-time, but the student should confirm the transcript and enrolment letter will show the correct status. Course withdrawals can change both full-time history and distance percentage.

Keep a valid study permit and follow the specific DLI and work conditions. A student who studies from Nepal for an extended period can face physical-location and entry issues in addition to PGWP deductions. Work done while physically outside Canada has separate treatment, while work inside Canada still requires current student eligibility.

Save study-permit applications and approvals, passports and travel history, course registrations, delivery notices, LMS or timetable evidence, transcripts and DLI letters. If a course unexpectedly moves online, request a dated institutional explanation and ask what in-person alternatives exist. Do not rely only on screenshots of marketing pages.

Before choosing an online section, ask the registrar and international office to confirm the mode, credits, physical attendance, transcript notation and current distance share. Request the answer for the exact student and intake. An adviser may explain school policy but only IRCC determines a federal work-permit application.

Students in Nepal planning a Canadian program should not start remote courses before study-permit approval unless they understand whether the time can count. Compare tuition-refund, deferral and late-arrival options. Paying Canadian tuition or receiving an LOA does not by itself make study from Nepal count as Canadian physical study.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
