Canada Maintained Status Travel Guide for Nepali Students 2027
A Nepal-specific guide to travel while a Canadian study-permit extension is pending covering maintained status, TRV validity, re-entry and study restrictions.
Prove the extension was submitted before permit expiry
Timing and completeness control the starting position.
Download the complete extension application, submission confirmation, fee receipt and account timestamp. Compare the timestamp with the study permit expiry in the correct Canadian time zone. A saved draft, unpaid form or application submitted after expiry does not create the same maintained-status position.
While remaining in Canada, an eligible student who applied on time may generally continue studying under the existing permit conditions until IRCC decides. Keep enrolment, attendance, academic progress and work-hour records. Maintained status does not grant new conditions, repair previous non-compliance or extend a TRV counterfoil in the passport.
Check the IRCC account for a return, cancellation, missing-fee issue or document request before travel. An incomplete application can be returned, changing the assumptions. If the current DLI, level or study circumstances changed, verify that the extension application and supporting explanation accurately cover those facts.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Submission | Before study-permit expiry | Timestamp and receipt |
| While in Canada | Continue under existing conditions if eligible | No new authority |
| Application health | Complete paid and still processing | Check account |
| Separate document | TRV or eTA validity | Maintained status does not renew it |
Carry valid travel documents and a complete student file
Boarding and admission involve separate decisions.
A Nepali passport holder normally needs a valid temporary resident visa to travel to Canada. Confirm the visa validity, number of entries and passport expiry before leaving. IRCC’s current help guidance says a student with a pending extension may travel and return when the required TRV or eTA is valid, subject to the port-of-entry decision.
Carry the passport, valid TRV, expired or current study permit, extension receipt, DLI enrolment letter, transcript, timetable, tuition evidence, financial proof and Canadian address. Add a short timeline explaining why the extension is pending and the reason and duration of travel. The officer can ask whether the student still meets all entry and study requirements.
The narrow expired-TRV exception for travel only to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon has exact conditions and is not a general route for travel to Nepal. A student flying to Kathmandu with an expired TRV must obtain the appropriate entry document before trying to return. Airline boarding checks occur before Canadian examination.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid for travel and requested stay | Check expiry |
| TRV | Valid entry document for Nepali passport | Check entries |
| Student file | Enrolment funds transcript and extension proof | Carry copies |
| Expired-TRV exception | Narrow nearby-trip conditions only | Not Nepal travel |
Do not study or work if re-entered only as a visitor
Pending processing may limit activity after return.
IRCC states that if the study-permit extension is still processing, the border officer may allow the person to enter as a visitor. In that situation the student cannot study until the extended permit is issued. Ask the officer for clear documentation of the admission and immediately inform the DLI’s international office.
Visitor admission also does not authorize student work. Do not return to class, a co-op placement or employment because the school term or employer schedule has started. Track the IRCC account and resume only when the new permit is approved and its conditions allow the activity. An active SIN or campus card does not change visitor restrictions.
Missing classes can affect academic progress, tuition, health insurance, housing and later PGWP evidence. Before departure, discuss remote access, authorized absence, deferral and refund possibilities with the DLI without assuming online study will preserve immigration eligibility. Get school decisions in writing.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Entry as student | Officer accepts valid study authorization | Conditions apply |
| Entry as visitor | No study until extension approval | No student work |
| School response | Absence deferral or remote options | Written confirmation |
| PGWP record | Protect full-time and compliance evidence | Explain interruption |
Compare urgent travel needs with academic and status consequences
A ticket should follow the immigration review.
List the purpose, dates and flexibility of travel, the extension stage, TRV validity, semester obligations and financial impact of delayed return. Emergency family travel may justify accepting more uncertainty, while optional travel can often wait for the new permit. No consultant can guarantee airline boarding or border admission.
If IRCC approves the extension while the student is abroad, carry the approval and verify whether the physical permit delivery and TRV situation support return. If IRCC refuses, do not travel to Canada as though the extension succeeded. Read the decision, stop unauthorized activity and obtain qualified advice about any available application or departure steps.
MKS Education can help assemble the timeline, travel checklist and DLI questions and identify when an authorized immigration professional should review the case. It cannot preserve maintained status after departure, issue entry permission or guarantee return, study, work or PGWP eligibility.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Travel need | Urgent optional and date flexibility | Document reason |
| Academic risk | Classes co-op tuition and PGWP record | Ask DLI first |
| Decision abroad | Approval or refusal changes return plan | Monitor account |
| MKS role | Timeline and evidence planning | No entry guarantee |
Keep a dated evidence file before submission
A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.
When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.
