Canada Study Permit 90-Day Completion Rule Guide for Nepali Students 2027
A Nepal-specific guide to Canada’s 90-day study-permit completion rule covering the first school notice, early completion, status, work and PGWP timing.
Record the first written notice of program completion
The earliest qualifying confirmation controls the calculation.
IRCC explains that the 90-day period begins when the school first notifies the student that the program is complete. The notice may be a completion letter, official transcript, email or another written confirmation. It is not necessarily the convocation date, the day the diploma arrives, the day a PGWP application is filed or the permit expiry printed on the document.
Ask the registrar and international office how the DLI communicates completion for the exact program. Save the first email with its full date and attachments, the date an online transcript first became available, the completion letter and any portal notification. If two documents have different dates, calculate cautiously from the earliest notice and request written clarification rather than selecting the later date for convenience.
IRCC may ask the DLI to confirm when the student completed the program. A student should not delete an inconvenient email or rely on a downloaded file whose creation date changed. Preserve the original message, portal screenshot, transcript request receipt and school explanation in a single timeline that can be reproduced for a future application.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Possible notice | Email letter transcript or portal confirmation | Keep earliest record |
| Not the trigger | Convocation or diploma delivery alone | Do not assume |
| Conflicting dates | Ask registrar for written clarification | Calculate cautiously |
| Evidence | Original message attachments and portal history | Preserve metadata |
Use the earlier of 90 days or the printed expiry
The two dates must be compared explicitly.
Start with the first written completion date, count 90 calendar days and compare that date with the expiry shown on the study permit. The permit becomes invalid on whichever comes first. For example, a permit that expires 30 days after completion does not remain valid for the full 90 days, while a permit printed for another year still ends after the completion-based 90-day period.
Early program completion can therefore shorten status substantially. A student who finishes a two-year credential in eighteen months cannot assume that the original study-permit end date remains usable. The DLI must report enrolment and compliance information, and the border or processing officer can examine whether the student is still pursuing the stated program.
Calendar calculations should include weekends and holidays. Build reminders well before the earliest endpoint for a PGWP application, visitor record, new study permit or departure. Processing time does not extend status when an application is filed after validity ends, and restoration has separate eligibility, fees and work restrictions.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Date A | Printed study-permit expiry | Read document |
| Date B | First completion notice plus 90 days | Count calendar days |
| Valid until | Earlier of Date A or Date B | Plan before it |
| Early finish | Can advance the validity endpoint | Recalculate immediately |
Stop student-authorized work when completion changes eligibility
A valid-looking permit does not guarantee permission to work.
Off-campus work authorization as a student generally ends when the school first confirms completion, unless a published transition rule applies. The 90-day study-permit validity window is not an automatic 90-day work period. Tell the employer the correct change date and do not treat an active SIN, payroll account or future shift schedule as immigration authorization.
A qualifying graduate may be able to work full-time after submitting a PGWP application if all current IRCC conditions are met, including having held a valid study permit at submission, completing the program, being eligible to work off campus during study and not exceeding allowed hours. The application receipt and supporting records should be retained for an employer query.
A person applying after losing status or through restoration does not receive the same interim work benefit and generally must wait for approval. Unauthorized work can lead to enforcement and can damage later study, work or permanent-residence applications. If the history is uncertain, stop work and obtain advice from an authorized immigration professional.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Completion notice | Student work generally ends | Not a 90-day work period |
| PGWP submitted | Interim work only if every condition is met | Keep proof |
| Restoration | No work while waiting for approval | Separate route |
| Employer | Share accurate authorization evidence | SIN is not permission |
Coordinate PGWP visitor study or departure planning
A documented timeline prevents last-minute status gaps.
For a PGWP plan, confirm the exact DLI and program eligibility, the 180-day application window, language results, field-of-study rule where applicable, passport validity and proof of full-time study. The 180-day PGWP deadline does not extend study-permit validity. Applying while the permit is still valid can materially affect interim work eligibility.
A graduate who is not ready or eligible to apply may need to change to visitor status before the permit becomes invalid or leave Canada. A student starting another program must assess whether a new study permit is required and whether work between programs is permitted. A visitor record does not authorize study or work, and travel does not erase a status breach.
MKS Education can help assemble the first-notice timeline, compare the two validity dates and organize questions for the DLI or authorized adviser. It cannot extend status, approve work, backdate an application or guarantee a PGWP. Recheck the live IRCC pages before acting because forms, criteria and processing instructions can change.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| PGWP | Eligibility documents and valid-status timing | Plan before completion |
| Visitor | Apply before status ends if appropriate | No work or study authority |
| New program | New permit and between-program rules | Separate analysis |
| MKS role | Timeline and document organization | No legal outcome guarantee |
Keep a dated evidence file before submission
A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.
When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.

Frequently asked questions
Detailed answers provide decision context and the Rank Math block supplies matching FAQPage structured data.
Does a study permit remain valid until the printed expiry after graduation?
Not always. It becomes invalid on the earlier of the printed expiry or 90 days after the school first gives written confirmation that the program is complete.
Which document starts the 90-day completion period?
The first written school notification can start it, including a completion email letter transcript or portal notice. Keep every record and use the earliest defensible date.
Can a graduate work throughout the 90-day period?
No. Study-permit validity and work authorization are different. Student work generally ends at completion unless the graduate qualifies under a separate rule such as work after a timely PGWP application.
Is the PGWP deadline also 90 days?
No. The current PGWP application window is generally 180 days, but that does not keep a study permit valid. Status and interim work depend on the permit and application timing.
How can MKS Education help with the 90-day rule?
MKS can organize the completion evidence calculate the competing dates and prepare questions. It cannot extend status authorize work or guarantee approval and will recommend qualified advice for complex cases.
