Canada Travel and Re-entry Guide for Nepali International Students 2027

A Nepal-specific guide to temporary travel outside Canada covering passports, TRVs, study permits, enrolment, extension decisions and border re-entry evidence.

Fact-checked: 31 July 2026Official-source workflowNepal-specific planning
Important: Valid documents do not guarantee re-entry. Airline staff decide boarding under travel-document rules and a Canadian border officer independently decides whether the returning student still meets entry and study requirements.
Audit every expiry date

Check passport TRV study permit and enrolment before booking

The shortest-valid document can control the trip.

Review the passport expiry, Canadian TRV counterfoil, physical study-permit expiry and planned return date. The permit is not a visa, and extending the permit does not automatically extend a TRV. A valid visa in an expired passport can involve extra travel-document handling, so follow current airline and IRCC instructions rather than moving or altering a counterfoil.

Confirm active attendance at the designated learning institution and obtain a recent enrolment letter, transcript or registration record for the next term. Carry the school calendar when travelling during a scheduled break. If the student is on authorized leave, part-time unexpectedly, between schools or facing suspension, obtain written advice before travel because study and work eligibility may have changed.

Check the destination country’s visa, transit-visa, passport-validity and health requirements as well as the rules of every connecting airport. A Canadian TRV does not grant entry to another country. Build enough time for Nepal or third-country formalities, and avoid a connection that requires crossing a border without the necessary permission.

Understand pending applications and maintained status travel

Leaving Canada can change what the student may do after return.

A student who applied to extend a study permit before expiry may have maintained status while remaining in Canada under the prior conditions. Travel during processing is risky. IRCC says the person may be allowed to re-enter if other requirements are met, but cannot study until the extension is approved when returning in the pending-extension situation described by current guidance.

Carry the extension submission confirmation, fee receipt, application number, old permit, IRCC messages and proof of continued enrolment. An approval message can support the file even before the new paper permit arrives, but it does not replace a required valid TRV. If the visa has expired, secure the correct travel document before departure except where a narrow official exception applies.

The automatic re-entry exception for certain visa-required travellers returning directly from only the United States or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is narrow and depends on the authorized stay and other conditions. Do not apply it to travel through Nepal or another country, and do not rely on a third-party summary. Read the live IRCC rule for the exact itinerary.

Show continuing study funds health and a credible itinerary

The officer can reassess eligibility at every entry.

Travel with the original passport, valid TRV, valid study permit or extension approval, current DLI enrolment letter, recent transcript, tuition payment evidence, return itinerary, Canadian address and school contact. Include an explanation and supporting record for an authorized break, research trip, family emergency or delayed return where relevant.

Bring evidence of accessible funds for continuing tuition and living expenses. The amount depends on remaining study, accommodation and family circumstances. If an immigration medical examination was required, IRCC says the result must be valid on the day of entry and is normally valid for 12 months. Recheck if a long absence or new health fact changes requirements.

Be ready to explain the program, progress, expected completion, reason for travel and plan to resume study. Answers should match the immigration record. A long unexplained absence, weak progress, cancelled registration, unauthorized work or inconsistent school history may create questions. Never fabricate a transcript, employment letter, ticket or family emergency.

Recheck permit conditions work and school reporting

Entry does not erase previous compliance problems.

Inspect any document issued or stamped at entry and keep a record of the arrival date. Report back to the school, resume the registered program on time and maintain the documents required by the international office. If the officer limited the stay or gave instructions, follow them rather than relying only on the older permit expiry.

Do not work during an authorized leave or a gap when IRCC rules do not allow it. If returning while an extension decision is pending, confirm whether study and work can resume under the exact circumstances. A valid SIN, employer schedule or prior eligibility does not override immigration conditions.

MKS Education can help build a document checklist, compare expiry dates and identify questions for the DLI or an authorized immigration professional. It cannot guarantee airline boarding, visa approval, border admission, study authorization or work rights. Delay travel when critical documents or personal circumstances are unresolved.

Keep a dated evidence file before submission

A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.

This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.

Questions from Nepal

Frequently asked questions

Detailed answers provide decision context and the Rank Math block supplies matching FAQPage structured data.

Can a Nepali student re-enter Canada with only a study permit?

Normally no. A study permit is not a travel document. A Nepali passport holder generally also needs a valid TRV plus a valid passport and must satisfy the border officer.

Does extending a study permit extend the Canadian visa?

No. IRCC does not automatically issue a new visitor visa after a permit extension. An eligible student who plans to travel must make a separate TRV application.

Can a student travel while a study-permit extension is pending?

Travel is possible but risky. IRCC says re-entry may be allowed if all requirements are met, yet study may not resume until approval in the pending-extension situation. Obtain individual advice.

What should a returning student carry?

Carry the passport valid TRV permit or approval current enrolment and transcript tuition evidence funds Canadian address itinerary and documents explaining any leave or unusual absence.

How can MKS Education help with student travel?

MKS can review expiry dates and a re-entry evidence checklist and flag issues for the school or an authorized adviser. It cannot guarantee a visa airline boarding border entry study or work rights.
