Canada Tax Return Guide for Nepali International Students 2027

A Nepal-specific Canadian tax guide covering tax residency, filing duties, employment and scholarship records, tuition slips, SIN or ITN and common student mistakes.

Fact-checked: 31 July 2026Official-source workflowNepal-specific planning
Important: This article is educational planning, not personal tax or legal advice. Immigration status and tax residency use different tests, and a refund, tuition credit or government benefit is never automatic.
Start with tax residency

Determine the correct Canadian filing position

A study permit does not settle the tax analysis.

The Canada Revenue Agency evaluates residential ties and the person’s full circumstances. A student who establishes significant Canadian ties may become a resident for income-tax purposes, while another can be a non-resident or deemed resident under different facts and a tax treaty. Arrival date, home, spouse or dependants, personal property, provincial connections and continuing Nepal ties can all matter.

A newcomer who becomes resident for tax purposes generally reports worldwide income for the resident portion of the year, including relevant Nepal-source income after arrival, converted using an accepted Canadian-dollar rate. Income from before Canadian residency can still be requested for benefit or credit calculations even when it is not taxed in the same way. Never omit Nepal records simply because the payer was abroad.

If residency is uncertain, use CRA’s current international-student guidance and seek individual advice. A DLI adviser or education counsellor should not guess a treaty result. Preserve passport travel records, lease dates, admission and enrolment records, marital information and the dates residential ties began or ended so the conclusion can be supported.

Report employment scholarships banking and tuition correctly

Every amount needs the right source document.

Employers normally issue a T4 for employment income and deductions. Banks may issue interest slips, institutions can issue scholarship or award information and the school provides an eligible tuition certificate such as a T2202. A slip’s absence does not automatically make income non-reportable. Compare payroll deposits, online accounts and year-end documents and request corrections when names, SIN or amounts are wrong.

Scholarships, bursaries and research funding can receive different treatment depending on enrolment, program and purpose. Employment, self-employment, tips, commissions and gig-platform earnings require complete records even when paid in cash or from outside Canada. International students should not assume remote work for a Nepal entity is invisible to Canadian tax rules.

Eligible tuition shown on a T2202 may generate a non-refundable tuition tax credit that can reduce tax, carry forward or sometimes be transferred within current limits. It is not a cash refund of tuition and does not include every student, residence, insurance or application charge. Check the school slip against actual enrolment and use the current federal and provincial rules.

Use the correct identifier and deadline

File with a SIN or ITN and preserve confirmation

Identifier eligibility depends on work authorization.

An international student authorized to work must obtain a Social Insurance Number. CRA says an international student without a work permit may need an Individual Tax Number to file a Canadian return or apply for family benefits and credits. An ITN is a tax-processing identifier, not permission to work, and processing can take weeks, so start early.

For most individuals, an annual return and any balance are due by April 30 of the following year. A self-employed taxpayer can have a later filing deadline while payment may still be due earlier. Confirm the exact 2027 deadline on CRA’s live page because weekends, special measures and personal circumstances can alter dates. Late filing can delay credits and trigger interest or penalties.

Use CRA-certified tax software, an authorized community tax clinic when eligible or a qualified professional familiar with international students and foreign income. Review the full return before authorization, keep the submission confirmation and Notice of Assessment and never allow a preparer to invent rent, tuition, dependants, expenses or immigration facts to manufacture a refund.

Protect accounts and separate benefits from promises

CRA does not guarantee a payment merely because a return was filed.

Filing can allow CRA to assess eligibility for credits and benefits, but entitlement depends on residency, income, family status and program rules. Some payments require a separate newcomer application before the first return, and both spouses may need to provide income information. Never build a study budget around an assumed refund, GST/HST credit or provincial payment.

CRA, Service Canada and banks use sensitive identifiers. Protect the SIN or ITN, access CRA accounts only through official pages and ignore calls or messages demanding gift cards, cryptocurrency, immediate transfer or account passwords. Verify notices independently. Tax-preparer consent should be limited, understood and revoked when no longer needed.

MKS Education can help students plan which documents to retain and distinguish admission, immigration, employment and tax steps. It does not prepare personal returns or guarantee credits. CRA determines tax treatment, Service Canada manages SIN records and qualified tax professionals advise on complex Nepal income, treaty, self-employment or residency questions.

Keep a dated evidence file before submission

A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.

This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.

Questions from Nepal

Frequently asked questions

Detailed answers provide decision context and the Rank Math block supplies matching FAQPage structured data.

Do all Nepali international students file a Canadian tax return?

The answer depends on Canadian tax residency income and other filing conditions. Many residents file annually even with low income, but a non-resident can have different duties. Check CRA or obtain personal advice.

Does a study permit make someone a Canadian tax resident?

No. Immigration status and tax residency are separate. CRA considers residential ties dates and treaty factors, so students should not use the permit alone to decide how to report income.

Can a student file taxes without a SIN?

A student not authorized to work may need an Individual Tax Number from CRA. A student authorized to work should obtain a SIN. Neither identifier by itself grants work authorization.

Will the T2202 refund all tuition paid?

No. A T2202 reports eligible tuition for a non-refundable credit. The result depends on taxable income and credit rules, and many application residence insurance and student fees are not eligible tuition.

How can MKS Education help with Canadian student taxes?

MKS can explain planning boundaries and document retention and refer students to official CRA guidance. It does not provide personal tax advice or guarantee refunds credits benefits work or immigration outcomes.
