Canada TRV Renewal Guide for Nepali Students Inside Canada 2027

A Nepal-specific guide to applying for a new Canadian temporary resident visa from inside Canada after receiving or extending a valid study permit.

Fact-checked: 31 July 2026Official-source workflowNepal-specific planning
Important: A valid study permit does not guarantee a new TRV, airline boarding or re-entry. Students should not make non-refundable travel plans until the passport has been returned with the valid visa and all other entry requirements are satisfied.
Confirm inside-Canada eligibility

Use the correct process only while holding valid study status

Location and permit status determine the application route.

IRCC’s inside-Canada process is for a person already in Canada who holds a valid study or work permit, expects to leave and return in the near future and has a visitor visa that is expired, about to expire or was issued for one entry. A student who has already left Canada must follow the outside-Canada process and its document requirements.

If a study-permit extension was approved online, IRCC currently permits the student to apply for the TRV as soon as the approval message arrives, even before the new paper permit comes by mail. Include the approval message screenshot, application number and other evidence of the valid approved extension. A merely submitted but undecided extension is not the same as approval.

Check the passport expiry before applying because a visa normally cannot remain valid beyond the passport. Renewing a Nepal passport can take time and may change passport numbers. Decide the sequence before urgent travel and make sure name, birth date and immigration identifiers remain consistent across the old passport, new passport and IRCC record.

Time the application around travel

Apply early and keep the passport-return period clear

A submission receipt is not a travel document.

IRCC advises eligible inside-Canada applicants to apply at least two months before planned departure and not leave Canada until the new visa is received. Processing estimates can change and exclude the time needed to send and return a passport. Add courier, holiday and error-correction time instead of using the displayed processing number as a promise.

Leaving Canada before the visa is issued can trigger extra biometrics or medical requirements, longer processing and transfer to an office abroad. The student may be unable to return until the visa is placed in the passport. If exceptional travel is unavoidable, IRCC instructs the applicant to use the web form before leaving so the file can be assessed and possibly transferred.

Do not buy a non-refundable Nepal ticket for a family event, festival or school break based only on application submission. Check the study calendar, exam dates, co-op or research duties and permit expiry. A trip that causes missed study or an unauthorized leave can create separate enrolment, work and later PGWP concerns.

Use the IRCC questionnaire form and supporting evidence correctly

The form name can appear counterintuitive.

Apply through the IRCC secure account and answer that the purpose is study, the current country of residence is Canada and the desired application is a Temporary Resident Visa. IRCC explains that the personalized checklist may show IMM 5257 named as an application made outside Canada; this is still the correct form for the described inside-Canada TRV route.

Prepare passport scans, valid study permit or approved extension evidence, enrolment confirmation, recent transcript where useful, financial evidence, digital photo, travel purpose and any document in the personalized checklist. Disclose refusals, status issues, family facts and travel history truthfully. Upload certified translations with the original-language document where required.

Pay only the current official fee through the government account and save the receipt and submission confirmation. Biometrics already on file may still be valid, but the account will issue instructions if action is needed. Do not mail the passport with the initial application unless IRCC specifically requests it after review.

Follow the request verify the counterfoil and prepare re-entry

Approval is incomplete until the travel document is usable.

When IRCC issues a passport request, follow the exact submission method, deadline, photographs or consent requirements and return-envelope instructions. Use a trackable approved channel and keep copies of the request, passport biographical page and tracking numbers. Never send a passport to a representative’s informal address or an unverified social-media contact.

After return, inspect the visa for correct name, passport number, number of entries and expiry. A V-1 visa issued to a student is not necessarily an error; the study permit remains the status document. Report a material counterfoil error through official channels before travel rather than altering the document.

For the trip, carry the valid passport containing the TRV, valid study permit or approval evidence, current enrolment letter, funds and other re-entry documents. MKS Education can help organize a checklist and flag inconsistencies, but only IRCC issues the visa and CBSA decides admission. No approval, duration or re-entry result can be guaranteed.

Keep a dated evidence file before submission

A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.

This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.
