Canada Work Between Study Programs Guide for Nepali Students 2027

A Nepal-specific guide to working between consecutive Canadian programs covering the 150-day limit, permit status, new LOA and prior work eligibility.

Fact-checked: 31 July 2026Official-source workflowNepal-specific planning
Important: A school break, new letter of acceptance or valid SIN does not independently authorize work. Missing one condition can make every shift in the gap unauthorized.
Test every condition together

Confirm the student fits the between-program work exception

The rule is cumulative rather than optional.

Start with the earlier Canadian program. The student must have completed it and must have been eligible to work off campus during study. Keep the completion letter, final transcript, study permit and records showing full-time enrolment and compliance with authorized hours. A person who was never eligible for off-campus work cannot create eligibility merely by finishing.

Next confirm the student has received written acceptance to a new full-time program at a designated learning institution. The exact campus and program matter, and the new start must be within 150 calendar days after receiving written confirmation that the previous program was completed. A conditional offer should be reviewed carefully because unresolved academic, language or payment conditions may affect whether the place is secured.

Finally confirm valid temporary status. The study permit must remain valid, or the student must have applied to extend it before expiry. If the new program requires a different DLI, level or permit condition, check whether the existing or extended permit covers the change. The exception does not cure an expired permit or late application.

Calculate the gap precisely

Measure 150 days from written completion confirmation

The clock does not begin at convocation.

Use the date the DLI first gives written confirmation of completion, such as an email, completion letter or transcript. Count 150 calendar days to the official start of the new program. Keep both records and the calculation. Do not use the date of the final exam, graduation ceremony, diploma delivery or first tuition payment unless that is also the documented completion notice.

If the new program begins more than 150 days later, IRCC says the student should change status to visitor or leave Canada until the new program starts. The student cannot keep working for the entire longer gap. A later intake selected for convenience, a deferred admission or a cancelled class can move the case outside the exception, so reassess immediately when dates change.

The school academic calendar should distinguish orientation from the true program start. Ask the new DLI for written confirmation if the LOA and timetable differ. Build a conservative calculation that includes weekends and holidays, and do not assume processing delays or a pending deferral pause the 150-day clock.

Work full-time only while all conditions continue

Authorization can change when facts change.

A student who satisfies the complete between-program rule may work full-time during the eligible gap. Keep schedules, contracts, time sheets, pay stubs and any self-employment records. The permission comes from the immigration rule and study-permit conditions, not from an employer, payroll system or SIN expiry date.

Stop work if the permit expires without a timely extension, the new admission is withdrawn, the start moves beyond 150 days or the student no longer plans to attend the qualifying full-time program. On the first day of the new regular academic session, ordinary student work limits generally resume, including the current weekly off-campus cap while classes are in session.

On-campus and off-campus jobs have separate eligibility wording, but neither should be treated as unlimited after the facts change. Tell employers about the transition date, maintain one combined calendar across multiple jobs and seek advice before taking contract or gig work whose hours are difficult to record.

Coordinate the academic pathway

Plan permit extension travel and the new intake together

Immigration and admission timelines must agree.

Before accepting the second program, compare the academic progression, tuition, DLI status, PGWP implications, field-of-study requirements where applicable and permit expiry. A short credential followed by an unrelated program may need a stronger study explanation. No adviser should promise that a pathway guarantees a work permit or permanent residence.

If the current permit will expire, file the correct extension before expiry with the new LOA and supporting documents. Retain the submission confirmation, fee receipt and full application copy. Travel while an extension is pending can affect the practical ability to return and work, so check entry documents and current guidance before leaving Canada.

MKS Education can help calculate the gap, organize both schools’ records and prepare questions for the DLI or authorized immigration professional. It cannot authorize a job, validate maintained status or guarantee permit, PGWP or residence outcomes. Recheck the official pages whenever completion, deferral, travel or permit dates change.

Keep a dated evidence file before submission

A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.

This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.

Questions from Nepal

Frequently asked questions

Detailed answers provide decision context and the Rank Math block supplies matching FAQPage structured data.

Can every graduate work full-time before the next program?

No. Full-time work is allowed only when all current IRCC conditions are met, including prior off-campus eligibility valid status a new full-time DLI acceptance and a start within 150 days.

When does the 150-day gap begin?

It begins from written confirmation that the previous program is complete, not automatically from the last exam or convocation. Preserve the earliest email letter or transcript.

What if the new program starts after 150 days?

IRCC instructs the student to change to visitor status or leave Canada until the new program begins. The student cannot keep working through a longer gap under this exception.

Can the student keep working after the new classes start?

Work may continue only under the ordinary rules that apply during the new academic session. The current off-campus weekly cap and all study-permit conditions must be followed.

How can MKS Education help with a two-program pathway?

MKS can compare school dates calculate the gap and organize permit and LOA evidence. It cannot authorize work confirm status or guarantee a permit PGWP or permanent residence.
