Begin with the current format. Since September 2023, the GRE General Test includes one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task. The older Analyze an Argument task is not part of the current test. A preparation course should therefore use the current ETS Issue directions, topic pool, scoring guide and sample responses rather than spending guided time on an obsolete test structure.

Read the task before choosing a position. The prompt presents an issue plus specific instructions that can ask the writer to consider conditions, consequences, competing views or the extent of agreement. The response must address those directions, not a memorised version of the topic. A strong thesis can be qualified; the important point is that the position is clear, responsive and supportable within the available time.

Develop reasons rather than collect impressive examples. Each body paragraph should make a relevant claim, explain why it supports the position and use a concrete example or plausible scenario. Consider a limitation, counterpoint or condition where it improves analysis. ETS scoring descriptions emphasise thoughtful analysis, logical development, focus, organisation and clear language. Specific reasoning matters more than a decorative quotation or obscure fact.

Use a practical 30-minute workflow. Read the directions, decide the position, outline two or three reasons, write focused paragraphs and reserve a final review for obvious errors. The ETS word processor provides basic editing functions but no spelling or grammar checker. Students therefore need a reliable paragraph structure, controlled sentence construction and enough revision time to correct errors that interfere with meaning.

Make feedback actionable. Comments should identify task response, thesis, development, example relevance, logical connection, paragraph order, transitions, sentence control, vocabulary precision and recurring mechanics. The student should revise selected parts, explain the change and write a new timed essay using the same target skill. Comparing the response with official sample essays and rater commentary is more useful than receiving only an estimated number.
