GRE 300 to 315 Improvement Plan

Start by breaking the total into its measures. GRE reports Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning separately on 130–170 scales, while Analytical Writing is scored separately from 0–6. Two students with the same V+Q total can need completely different plans. Compare the profile with official programme requirements and published expectations rather than assuming that an equal split or a generic 315 is right for every master’s, business, law or doctoral pathway.

Build a trustworthy diagnosis. A timed POWERPREP test shows how the student handles the current computer-delivered structure, tools and section clocks. After an official GRE attempt, ETS offers the free GRE Diagnostic Service through the account, showing Verbal and Quantitative question types answered correctly or incorrectly, skill areas, difficulty and time spent. Combine that evidence with an essay review and a manual error log.

For Quantitative improvement, look first for recurring foundation gaps. Review number properties, ratios and percentages, algebraic translation, equations, geometry, statistics and data interpretation only where the diagnostic shows need. Each lesson should end with targeted questions and a delayed retest. Record whether the error came from missing knowledge, misreading a condition, choosing an inefficient method, calculation or entering the wrong response format.

For Verbal improvement, connect vocabulary to reasoning. Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence require logical clues and relationships, while Reading Comprehension requires passage structure, inference and evidence. Group errors by vocabulary, sentence logic, passage mapping, inference or option elimination. Reading explanations without restating the proof in the student’s own words often creates familiarity but not transferable skill.

Add timing only after accuracy moves. Use short mixed sets, then the official 12- and 15-question section lengths. Mark unusually expensive questions, protect the remaining items and answer every Verbal and Quant question because ETS does not subtract points for an incorrect response. A fresh timed POWERPREP simulation near the decision date should confirm that improvements survive new questions, full-section order and normal pressure.
