USA University Enrollment Deposit and I-20 Timeline for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A post-admission workflow for Nepali students moving from a U.S. university offer to enrollment confirmation, Form I-20 review, SEVIS payment and F-1 visa preparation.
An admission offer, enrollment confirmation and Form I-20 are connected—but not identical
First read the official offer and admitted-student portal. Confirm the programme, campus, intake, conditions, scholarships, total cost, reply deadline and deposit terms. A university may require an enrollment deposit to reserve a place, but the amount, refund rule, waiver process and relationship to I-20 issuance vary by institution.
After admission to an SEVP-certified school, the university’s designated school official can issue Form I-20 when its institutional requirements are satisfied. These commonly include identity and financial evidence, but the exact portal, documents, review sequence and processing time are set by the school. Do not pay a third party or assume one university’s timeline applies to another.
Move through the admitted-student steps in the right order
| Stage | Student action | Evidence to verify | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offer review | Read the offer, conditions, programme, campus, start term and response deadline. | Official letter and admitted-student portal. | Paying before checking whether the offer is conditional or for the intended campus. |
| Enrollment decision | Accept or decline through the university’s authorised system and pay a deposit only if required. | Deposit amount, deadline, refund/waiver terms and receipt. | Assuming every deposit is refundable or transferable. |
| I-20 request | Follow the international office’s instructions for passport and financial documentation. | Name, date of birth, programme, funding, dependants and delivery method. | Submitting inconsistent names, expired documents or incomplete funding evidence. |
| I-20 review | Check every field immediately and contact the DSO about an error. | SEVIS ID, school, education level, major/CIP, dates, cost and funding. | Using an incorrect form without requesting correction. |
| SEVIS and visa | Pay the I-901 fee using the correct SEVIS record, follow current embassy instructions and prepare the visa application. | Official receipt, DS-160 confirmation and appointment instructions. | Paying through an unofficial link or using mismatched SEVIS details. |
| Pre-departure | Complete housing, health, registration and arrival tasks and carry required originals or official copies. | Current university checklist and travel documents. | Booking non-changeable travel before understanding visa and university timing. |
Arizona State University’s admitted international first-year checklist shows an institution-specific deposit and I-20 workflow. The University of Illinois visa checklist uses its own I-20 application and document process. These are examples of variation, not deadlines for every university.
Check the decision before paying
Compare the exact degree, academic level, campus, delivery format, start term and any conditions with the application. Recalculate tuition, mandatory fees, insurance, housing, meals, travel and realistic personal costs. Confirm whether the scholarship is renewable, conditional, applied before the I-20 estimate or credited later.
An enrollment deposit can confirm attendance, reserve a seat or activate later tasks, but institutional rules differ. Read the refund, deferral and deadline terms in the official portal. Keep the receipt. Do not send funds to a personal account, unverified agent or link received outside the university’s authorised channels.
Submit consistent identity and financial evidence
Study in the States explains SEVP certification as the authority that allows a certified school to issue Forms I-20 after admission. The DSO—not an education agent—creates the student record. Follow the school’s current instructions for a passport copy, address, funding sources, sponsor evidence, scholarship letters and dependants.
Financial evidence must be genuine, current and consistent with the funding plan. The amount and acceptable document format are school-specific. Use the USA financial-document checklist and Form I-20 and SEVIS guide without treating either as a replacement for the admitted university’s instructions.
Inspect the issued Form I-20 line by line
Check your name against the passport, country and date of birth, school and campus, education level, primary major and CIP code, programme dates, earliest admission date, estimated costs, funding and dependants. Sign only as instructed and save a secure copy. Contact the DSO promptly if anything is wrong; do not alter the form yourself.
The official sample Form I-20 explains that the form documents admission and eligibility to seek F-1 admission, but it is not a visa and does not guarantee entry. Use the STEM and CIP-code guide if programme classification is relevant.
Use the correct SEVIS record and official instructions
The U.S. Department of State student-visa page sets the current federal sequence: acceptance by an SEVP-approved school, Form I-20, I-901 SEVIS fee and visa application. It currently states that new-student visas may be issued up to 365 days before the course start and that students may not enter more than 30 days before the start date. Recheck the page and embassy instructions because policies and appointment conditions can change.
Keep the I-901 receipt, DS-160 confirmation and university/embassy instructions aligned with the same intended school and SEVIS record. Follow the DS-160 guide, F-1 interview guide and complete F-1 visa process.

Enrollment deposit and I-20 FAQs
Is an enrollment deposit required by every U.S. university?
No. Deposit amounts, deadlines, waivers, refund rules and whether payment is required before later tasks vary by institution and applicant type.
Does paying a deposit guarantee that the university will issue my I-20 immediately?
No. The school may require additional identity, financial or admission documents and must complete its review. Follow the international office’s current process and timing.
Can an education agent issue Form I-20?
No. Form I-20 is issued through the SEVP-certified school by an authorised designated school official after the school’s requirements are met.
What should I check on Form I-20?
Check passport identity, school and campus, education level, major and CIP code, programme dates, cost, funding, dependants and SEVIS ID. Ask the DSO to correct errors.
Should I pay the SEVIS I-901 fee before receiving Form I-20?
Use the sequence and instructions on official government and university pages. The payment must be tied to the correct SEVIS record shown on the issued form.
How can MKS Education help after admission?
