Move through the admitted-student steps in the right order

Arizona State University’s admitted international first-year checklist shows an institution-specific deposit and I-20 workflow. The University of Illinois visa checklist uses its own I-20 application and document process. These are examples of variation, not deadlines for every university.

Check the decision before paying

Compare the exact degree, academic level, campus, delivery format, start term and any conditions with the application. Recalculate tuition, mandatory fees, insurance, housing, meals, travel and realistic personal costs. Confirm whether the scholarship is renewable, conditional, applied before the I-20 estimate or credited later.

An enrollment deposit can confirm attendance, reserve a seat or activate later tasks, but institutional rules differ. Read the refund, deferral and deadline terms in the official portal. Keep the receipt. Do not send funds to a personal account, unverified agent or link received outside the university’s authorised channels.

Submit consistent identity and financial evidence

Study in the States explains SEVP certification as the authority that allows a certified school to issue Forms I-20 after admission. The DSO—not an education agent—creates the student record. Follow the school’s current instructions for a passport copy, address, funding sources, sponsor evidence, scholarship letters and dependants.

Financial evidence must be genuine, current and consistent with the funding plan. The amount and acceptable document format are school-specific. Inspect the issued Form I-20 line by line

Check your name against the passport, country and date of birth, school and campus, education level, primary major and CIP code, programme dates, earliest admission date, estimated costs, funding and dependants. Sign only as instructed and save a secure copy. Contact the DSO promptly if anything is wrong; do not alter the form yourself.

The official sample Form I-20 explains that the form documents admission and eligibility to seek F-1 admission, but it is not a visa and does not guarantee entry. Use the STEM and CIP-code guide if programme classification is relevant.

Use the correct SEVIS record and official instructions

The U.S. Department of State student-visa page sets the current federal sequence: acceptance by an SEVP-approved school, Form I-20, I-901 SEVIS fee and visa application. It currently states that new-student visas may be issued up to 365 days before the course start and that students may not enter more than 30 days before the start date. Recheck the page and embassy instructions because policies and appointment conditions can change.

4. Monitor the official portal and email.
5. Review and sign the issued form as instructed.
6. Pay the I-901 fee through the official site.
7. Complete DS-160 and appointment steps.
8. Prepare truthful interview evidence.
9. Complete housing, insurance and registration tasks.
