Understand what the code classifies

NCES describes CIP as a taxonomy for tracking and reporting fields of study and programme completions. The code describes an instructional programme; it is not a ranking, accreditation decision, admission requirement or job guarantee.

A six-digit code is more specific than a broad family. Record the full code and title, programme name, campus and date verified. Do not rely on a search result that shows only a two-digit family.

Expect variation across institutions

Computer science, data science, information systems, business analytics, engineering and finance programmes can be classified differently depending on their curricula. A programme containing technology or analytics in its name is not automatically on the STEM list.

Ask for the exact code before paying a deposit when STEM status materially affects the decision. Keep the written reply, but verify again on the Form I-20 and with the designated school official because codes and programme structures can change.

Match every digit

Use the current DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List linked from ICE or Study in the States. Match the full code and code title. A broad NCES CIP family may contain both listed and unlisted specialities.

The list can be updated. Record the date checked and avoid copying an old PDF from a third-party website. If the programme’s code is not clear, the university—not a consultant—must confirm its own classification.

Treat STEM as one decision factor

STEM designation can matter for the separate STEM OPT pathway, but students should still compare curriculum, prerequisites, faculty, thesis or capstone structure, cost, assistantships and career fit. A weak academic match is not repaired by a preferred code.

Prepare for the programme, not the label

Undergraduate STEM applicants may need SAT evidence depending on the college; use the MKS SAT app. Relevant graduate programmes may require or consider GRE or GMAT; use the MKS GRE app or MKS GMAT app after checking the policy. English admission may accept IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test, supported through the MKS IELTS app and MKS classes.

No test score determines CIP classification. The university’s programme assignment and official list control.

Do not turn programme selection into a visa promise

A degree on the current STEM list is one part of STEM OPT eligibility. The student must first follow F-1 and post-completion OPT requirements, and the employer and training plan must meet current rules. Timely filing and DSO recommendations also matter.

• Exact university, campus, degree and major.
• Official programme URL and current curriculum.
• Full six-digit CIP code and title.
• Written confirmation from the institution when needed.
• Exact match on the current DHS STEM list.
• Form I-20 code checked after issuance.
• Separate SEVP, accreditation, cost and admission checks.
• Current DSO guidance for any employment or OPT question.
