MS Electrical Engineering vs Computer Engineering vs Embedded Systems in USA for Nepali Students 2026–2027

A curriculum-first comparison for Nepali electrical, electronics and computer graduates choosing broad electrical depth, hardware-software engineering or a specialised embedded-systems route.

Fact-checked: 25 July 2026Electrical · Computer · Embedded systemsOfficial-source workflow
Quick answer

MS Electrical Engineering suits students seeking depth in circuits, power, communications, signal processing, controls or electronics. Computer Engineering connects digital hardware, architecture and systems software. Embedded Systems concentrates on real-time computing, firmware and hardware-software integration, but may be a track rather than a separate degree.

How the three pathways differ

Electrical and Computer Engineering overlap, yet they are not interchangeable. Embedded systems can sit inside either field and is sometimes offered as a named interdisciplinary programme. The awarding department, required curriculum and transcript title matter.

PathMain academic focusPreparation to demonstrate
MS Electrical EngineeringCircuits, electronics, power, control, communications and signal processingCalculus, differential equations, circuits, signals and the chosen specialisation
Computer EngineeringComputer architecture, digital systems, networks and hardware-software integrationDigital logic, programming, architecture, electronics and systems foundations

Use this table only as a starting framework. One university can label a concentration differently from another, so verify every required course.

Electrical engineering

Choose depth in electrical domains

Electrical Engineering provides a broad technical home for power and energy, control, communications, signal processing, microelectronics, photonics and related areas. Applicants should connect their Nepal transcript and projects to one or two coherent areas rather than presenting unrelated interests.

If the programme is research based, review current laboratories, recent faculty publications and thesis expectations. For a coursework programme, evaluate elective availability and the capstone. EducationUSA’s graduate engineering guidance emphasises current departmental research and fit rather than a university name alone.

Computer engineering

Choose hardware-software systems

Computer Engineering is suitable when your goals sit between electronics and computing: processor architecture, digital design, networks, systems, cybersecurity hardware, FPGA work or integrated platforms. Computer Science may share programming courses but usually has a different centre of gravity. Compare our Computer Science and data programme comparison if your target is primarily software or data.

Students from Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering or related degrees should map digital logic, architecture, microprocessors, programming, signals and electronics. Admission decisions depend on the department’s assessment of preparation.

Embedded systems

Choose a focused implementation route

Embedded Systems programmes focus on computing inside devices and engineered products. Curricula can cover real-time operating systems, microcontrollers, embedded Linux, firmware, interfaces, sensors, control, verification, security and low-power design. The specialisation can be excellent for students with strong projects, but a narrow title is not automatically better.

Check whether Embedded Systems is the official degree, a concentration printed on a transcript, or simply an elective group. Then verify which department owns the programme and which CIP code it reports. These details can affect curriculum interpretation and STEM designation.

Quality checks

Understand accreditation and classification

ABET provides programme-level accreditation and an official search tool. It does not accredit an entire university through one engineering programme, and it does not accredit doctoral programmes. At the graduate level, status varies, so verify the exact programme rather than making a general claim.

NCES separates Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Computer Engineering and related classifications. A specialisation may use the broader degree’s code. Use the university’s official I-20 information and the current DHS list, as explained in our CIP and STEM guide.

Evidence and funding

Show what you can actually do

A strong application can explain one or two technically substantial projects: the problem, design decisions, tools, tests, results and your own contribution. For embedded work, measurable debugging or performance evidence is more credible than a list of components. For power, communications or controls, connect theory to analysis or experimentation.

Research programmes may offer assistantships, but availability depends on budgets, faculty projects and competition. Review our RA and TA guide and compare total cost before relying on any expected award.

Testing plan

Use programme-specific admissions rules

The GRE can be required, optional, recommended or not considered. English-language evidence may be accepted through IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test or TOEFL, depending on the institution. A test score does not replace missing prerequisites.

MKS Education helps Nepali students create a shortlist, check current test policies and prepare for GRE and accepted English tests. Use the USA master’s application guide to coordinate documents and deadlines.

Prepare for USA admission with MKS Education

For Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Embedded Systems, confirm the GRE policy first and use MKS GRE preparation where relevant. Select IELTS, PTE, Duolingo or TOEFL preparation only after confirming the accepted tests and score rules for every programme. MKS Education provides structured SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL-focused preparation in Nepal. We connect test preparation with programme selection, application evidence and realistic deadlines.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Electrical and Computer Engineering pathways

Which degree is best after Electrical or Electronics Engineering in Nepal?

Choose Electrical Engineering for depth in circuits, power, communications, control or electronics; Computer Engineering for hardware-software systems; or Embedded Systems for focused real-time computing and firmware.

Can a Computer Engineering graduate apply to Electrical Engineering?

Sometimes, especially for aligned areas such as digital systems, communications, controls or electronics. The department decides whether your mathematics, circuits and other prerequisites are sufficient.

Is Embedded Systems always a separate master’s degree?

No. It may be a standalone programme, a concentration within Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a certificate or track. Read the official award title and curriculum.

Does an Embedded Systems title guarantee STEM OPT eligibility?

No title alone guarantees it. The programme’s exact CIP code on Form I-20 must be checked against the current DHS STEM list, and all immigration eligibility requirements remain separate.

Do these programmes require the GRE?

Requirements vary by university and intake. Check whether the department requires, recommends, accepts or does not consider the GRE before registering.

What portfolio evidence is useful?

Relevant evidence can include hardware prototypes, firmware, PCB or FPGA work, controls, communications, power projects, verification results, code repositories and a precise explanation of your own contribution.
