Read the degree handbook, not only the title

Universities use different names and requirements. A “project option” can involve substantial applied research, while a “coursework option” may still require a comprehensive exam. A thesis can vary in credits, proposal process, committee, defence and publication expectations.

Compare the current catalogue, graduate handbook and department page. Ask whether the track is selected at application, after enrolment or after finding a supervisor.

Use a thesis when the process itself matters

A thesis can be useful when the student wants deeper methods training, a substantial research sample or preparation for research-intensive work. It requires patience with problem definition, ethics or approvals, data quality, failed approaches and revision.

Do not choose a thesis only because it sounds prestigious. Confirm that relevant supervisors are available and that the programme supports the intended methods. A weakly supervised thesis can delay completion.

Evaluate capstone and project quality

A non-thesis route can suit students who need broader advanced coursework, professional practice or an applied capstone. Inspect who supplies projects, how teams are assessed, what deliverables are produced and whether the student can show individual contribution.

Non-thesis does not mean no research. Some programmes include research seminars, independent study or a publishable project. Ask what graduates actually complete.

Build research evidence in either route

A thesis can make research readiness easier to demonstrate, but doctoral admissions examine the full file: academic preparation, methods, recommendations, statement, writing or research samples and faculty fit. A non-thesis student can still pursue research through projects, assistantships or independent work when the programme permits.

Check the written terms

A thesis option may align with a funded research project, but an RA is not automatic. Ask whether tuition, fees, insurance, stipend, summer support and duration are documented. Non-thesis students may have other funding routes, but programme restrictions vary.

Evaluate access before choosing a thesis

Ask how supervisors are allocated, how many students each faculty member currently advises, how often meetings normally occur and what happens if a project or adviser changes. Confirm access to laboratories, datasets, software, ethics review and fieldwork support before assuming the proposed research is feasible.

A positive email from a professor is not the same as formal supervision or funding. The department’s admission and assignment process controls. Non-thesis applicants should make similar checks for capstone mentors, external clients and project ownership.
