USA University Resume and Activities List Guide for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A practical evidence-writing guide for Nepali undergraduate, master’s, MBA and PhD applicants preparing Common App activities, résumés and academic CVs.
Describe contribution and evidence, not impressive-sounding titles
A US application résumé, CV or activities list should use accurate dates, roles, responsibilities and outcomes. Undergraduate applicants must follow the Common App and college rules; graduate applicants should match the programme’s requested professional or academic format. Never add a separate document when the institution says not to.
Choose the format the application requests
The Common App first-year application includes activities, work and responsibilities. A college may optionally permit a résumé, but the activities section remains a structured part of the application. For graduate programmes, a résumé may emphasise professional experience, while an academic CV may include research, publications, conferences, teaching and technical evidence.
Read the instruction before deciding length and content. “Upload optional résumé” does not mean every applicant benefits from repeating the same information.
| Evidence type | Useful details | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Activity or service | Role, organisation, dates, time, action and contribution | Prestigious label with no personal work |
| Employment | Employer, title, dates, responsibilities and outcomes | Inflated authority or hidden gaps |
| Project | Problem, tools, contribution and result | Claiming team output as individual work |
| Research | Question, method, supervisor, contribution and output | Calling coursework an independent publication |
| Award | Issuer, level, date and selection context where useful | Unverifiable or purchased recognition |
| Skill or test | Specific tool, level or verified credential when relevant | A long generic skill list without evidence |
Include responsibilities beyond formal clubs
Common App notes that students may share work, hobbies, clubs, community engagement and other responsibilities. Nepali applicants can include family business work, caregiving, peer tutoring, school leadership, sports, creative practice, community projects and independent learning when those activities are real.
Prioritise significance and continuity. Use concise verbs that describe what the student did. Time commitments should be honest and possible alongside school. If an activity changed across years, use the available description or additional-information area only when clarification is necessary.
Connect experience to the programme
A master’s résumé should highlight relevant education, projects, employment, research, technical skills and outcomes. An MBA résumé should make progression, decision-making, teamwork and leadership clear. A PhD CV should distinguish research roles, methods, publications, presentations, teaching and academic service.
Use reverse chronological order unless the programme requests another format. Spell out unfamiliar Nepal-specific organisations or qualifications briefly. Keep dates consistent with the application, SOP and recommendation evidence.
Quantify only when the number is meaningful and true
Numbers can clarify scale, frequency, improvement or responsibility, but unsupported percentages weaken credibility. Explain the baseline when a result depends on it. Do not convert a team’s total outcome into a personal achievement.
Use authorship labels accurately for collaborative research, software or publications. State “contributed to” when that is the honest description and be ready to explain the work in an interview.
Keep scores in the correct application section
Do not turn the résumé into a second score report unless the programme requests test information. The official application and testing agency remain the controlling score routes. MKS Education provides preparation through the SAT app for undergraduate applicants, the GRE app for relevant graduate pathways, the GMAT app for relevant business programmes and the IELTS app alongside PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL-focused preparation.
Preserve the applicant’s own record
AI can help identify inconsistent tense or unclear wording, but it must not invent duties, metrics, research methods, employers, dates or skills. The applicant should be able to explain every line naturally. Follow institutional rules on AI assistance and disclosure.
Ask one reviewer to check clarity and another to compare dates against the application. Keep a final PDF and the source document used for submission.
Make every document support the same story
The activities list, résumé, essays, recommendations and interview should add complementary evidence without contradiction. Use the Common App guide, college essay guide, SOP guide and admission interview guide.
Review the evidence before upload
- The required document type and length are confirmed.
- Every date matches the application and academic history.
- Roles and results describe the applicant’s actual contribution.
- Unfamiliar organisations or Nepal-specific qualifications have brief context.
- Links, file names and contact details are professional and current.
- The PDF opens correctly and uses readable spacing on a phone and computer.
- No sensitive identification, salary or family information is included unless requested.
Save a master record, then create programme-specific versions without changing historical facts. Recheck the final uploaded file because an old résumé can remain attached after later edits.

USA résumé and activities questions from Nepal
Do all US undergraduate applications require a résumé?
No. Common App includes an activities section, and some colleges may not want a separate résumé unless requested or permitted. Follow the college checklist.
What can a Nepali student include as an activity?
Activities may include clubs, service, paid work, family responsibilities, sports, arts, independent projects, hobbies and community engagement when described accurately.
Should a graduate CV be one page?
Programme instructions control length. A professional résumé may be concise, while an academic CV can be longer when it documents research, publications, teaching and technical work.
Can I estimate activity hours if I did not track them?
Use a reasonable honest estimate and keep it consistent with dates and other commitments. Do not inflate hours or create a schedule that could not have occurred.
Should I include every certificate and short course?
Include items relevant to the programme or evidence story. A long list of unrelated certificates can hide stronger academic, research, work or service evidence.
How can MKS Education help with a résumé or activities list?
MKS Education helps applicants organise truthful, programme-relevant evidence and connect it with essays, recommendations, test preparation and interview practice.
