Quick answer

Use Common App as a shared platform, not a universal rulebook

Common App lets students complete common information and apply to participating colleges, but every institution still sets its own deadlines, fees, supplements, document routes, SAT policy and English-proficiency requirements. A safe workflow is to prepare accurate core information once and maintain a separate checklist for each college.

Applicant type

Choose the correct application route first

Common App distinguishes first-year and transfer applicants. A Nepali student completing school and applying for a first bachelor’s programme normally uses the first-year route. If the student enrolled at a college or university after secondary school, the transfer definition may apply even when only a short period was completed. Check the platform guidance and the college’s own policy before creating duplicate accounts.

Use the legal name that appears on the passport and official academic records. Keep name order, date of birth, email, school details and graduation dates consistent. A personal email that the student controls is safer than an address that may expire after school.

Materials

Gather evidence before filling fields

Common App’s first-year guide recommends gathering the high-school transcript, activity information, testing details, family information and academic honours. Nepali students should also have the passport, SEE and +2 or equivalent records, school contact details and certified English translations when a college requires them.

Do not convert grades into a US GPA unless a college explicitly instructs you to do so. Enter courses and results in the format the application requests, and use the additional-information area only when useful context cannot be presented elsewhere. A credential evaluation is ordered only when the institution requires one.

College list

Add institutions only after checking fit and affordability

Common App makes it easy to add colleges, but a long list is not automatically a strong list. Check programme availability, prerequisites, location, accreditation, total cost, financial aid, testing, English proficiency and admission selectivity. Record the exact deadline type—such as early, regular or rolling—without assuming the same terminology has identical conditions everywhere.

Use the USA university shortlisting guide and the SEVP and accreditation check guide. Common App participation does not itself prove programme quality, accreditation or F-1 eligibility.

Testing

Coordinate SAT and English scores with each college policy

The Common App testing section may allow self-reporting, but colleges decide whether scores are required, optional, considered or not used. They also decide whether official reports are needed at application or after enrolment. Check the current 2026–2027 testing page for every target college.

For undergraduate admission, MKS Education offers structured preparation through the MKS SAT web app and classes. A submitted result should support the academic profile; it does not replace school performance, essays or prerequisite preparation.

English-proficiency policy is separate. Verify IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test acceptance, score validity, subscores and exemptions. Use the MKS IELTS practice app with the relevant MKS preparation route.

Activities and writing

Use concise, truthful and student-owned answers

Activities can include paid work, clubs, sports, community service, creative work, family responsibilities and independent projects. Prioritise the experiences that best explain commitment and contribution. Dates, roles and weekly time should be realistic and consistent with school and recommendation records.

The personal essay, college-specific questions and writing supplements are different tasks. Common App publishes the current 2026–2027 essay prompts, while each college controls its supplements. Draft outside the portal, preserve the student’s natural voice, and paste only after checking formatting and word limits.

AI may help the student create reflection questions or identify unclear sentences, but it must not invent experiences or replace the student’s authorship. Follow every college’s current application-integrity and AI policy.

Recommenders

Invite the right people early

The college determines which school forms and recommendations it requires. Use the correct recommender role and a current professional email. Ask before sending an invitation, provide the deadline, and let the recommender write independently. Do not create an account on the recommender’s behalf or upload a confidential letter yourself.

Monitor the checklist without pressuring a recommender for private content. A submitted Common App form may still leave an external transcript or testing requirement incomplete.

Final submission

Review one college at a time

Before submission, use the preview to inspect identity, education, testing, activities and writing. Then open the college-specific checklist and confirm every question, supplement and fee. Payment confirmation is not proof that recommendations, transcripts or external score reports have arrived.

Save the application PDF or confirmation, receipt and login details securely. Continue monitoring the applicant portal because a college may create a separate account for missing items and decisions. Read the USA undergraduate admission guide, application documents checklist and application fee guide.

Is creating a Common App account free?

Common App states that using its platform is free, but individual colleges may charge application fees. Fee-waiver eligibility and college-specific charges must be checked in the application and on official college pages.
