MS Computer Science vs Data Science vs Information Systems in USA for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A curriculum-first comparison for Nepali computing graduates choosing among US master’s programmes in computer science, data science and information systems.
Choose by curriculum, prerequisites and intended work
MS Computer Science commonly develops deeper computing foundations and systems expertise; Data Science combines computing with statistics and modelling; Information Systems often focuses on applying technology to organisational needs. Programme titles are inconsistent, so compare required courses, electives, capstone or thesis structure, faculty and the exact CIP code.
Understand the centre of each degree
The US National Center for Education Statistics uses CIP classifications to describe instructional fields, but universities create their own programme names and curricula. A degree called “Information Systems” at one institution may be technical, while another is management-oriented. Data Science can sit in computing, statistics, engineering or an interdisciplinary school.
Read the degree plan rather than relying on marketing language. Identify what every student must study, not only attractive electives that may be unavailable or restricted.
| Programme | Typical academic centre | Preparation to verify |
|---|---|---|
| MS Computer Science | Algorithms, software, systems, theory, AI or specialised computing | Programming, data structures, algorithms, discrete mathematics and calculus |
| MS Data Science | Statistics, modelling, machine learning, data management and visualisation | Programming, calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics |
| MS Information Systems | Databases, enterprise systems, analytics, product or technology management | Computing and database foundations plus organisational or business context |
| MS Business Analytics | Data analysis for business decisions and operations | Statistics, quantitative reasoning and business preparation |
| Software or Computer Engineering | Engineering design, architecture, embedded or software systems | Engineering mathematics, programming and field-specific prerequisites |
Map Nepal coursework to prerequisites
BSc CSIT, BIT, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and related degrees do not contain identical modules. Create a prerequisite map using transcripts and course descriptions. A Computer Science department may expect formal algorithms or theory; a Data Science programme may emphasise probability and linear algebra; an Information Systems programme may value databases, systems analysis and organisational experience.
Do not hide missing preparation. Ask whether prerequisite courses can be completed before entry, during the first term or not at all. A conditional prerequisite can increase time and cost.
Compare required courses and assessment
List core courses, allowed electives, thesis or non-thesis option, capstone, internship rules and credit total. For Data Science, check the balance of statistics, computing and domain application. For Information Systems, check how much programming and quantitative work is compulsory. For Computer Science, check whether non-CS graduates can enter and how foundation courses are handled.
Faculty expertise, laboratory access and course rotation matter. An elective shown in a catalogue may not run every year. Ask the department which courses are realistically available to the intended intake.
Verify the exact programme code
A programme title does not determine STEM OPT eligibility. DHS uses the CIP code associated with the student’s degree, and the current STEM Designated Degree Program List controls. Ask the university for the exact six-digit CIP code expected on the Form I-20 and compare it with the official list. Do not assume that every analytics, information systems or management programme is STEM-designated.
STEM classification is not the same as programme quality, admission eligibility or guaranteed employment. Use the STEM OPT extension guide for the separate post-study process.
Prepare only for the verified requirements
The GRE can be required, optional or not accepted. If relevant, MKS Education provides structured preparation through the MKS GRE app. A strong result can add quantitative and verbal evidence where the department considers it, but it cannot replace prerequisites or an authentic technical record.
English-proficiency rules vary. Confirm IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test acceptance, minimums, subscores and waivers. Use the MKS IELTS app with MKS classes for the accepted route.
Describe capabilities rather than promising a job title
Computer Science can support many technical directions; Data Science can support data modelling and analysis; Information Systems can support technology implementation, product, systems and organisational work. Actual roles depend on coursework, experience, portfolio, communication, authorisation and the labour market.
In the SOP, explain the skills and problems you want to develop, then connect them to verified courses and prior preparation. Avoid claiming that a degree automatically produces a specific salary, employer or immigration result.
Score each programme on evidence
- Academic prerequisites and missing foundation courses.
- Required core courses and technical depth.
- Thesis, capstone and internship structure.
- Faculty, laboratories and course rotation.
- Exact CIP code and current STEM-list match.
- Total cost, assistantship eligibility and remaining funding.
- GRE and English-test policy.
- Programme-specific application documents.

USA computing master’s questions from Nepal
Which is better in USA: MS Computer Science, Data Science or Information Systems?
There is no universal best choice. Computer Science usually emphasises computing theory and systems, Data Science combines computing, mathematics and statistics for data work, and Information Systems often connects technology with organisational processes. Compare the actual curriculum.
Can a BSc CSIT or BIT graduate apply to all three programme types?
Often applicants can find suitable programmes, but prerequisites vary. Each department may expect different programming, algorithms, mathematics, statistics, databases or business preparation.
Is every Data Science or Information Systems degree STEM-designated?
No. STEM status depends on the programme’s assigned CIP code and the current DHS list, not only the programme title. Request the exact CIP code from the institution.
Do these programmes require the GRE?
Policies vary by university and cycle. The GRE may be required, optional or not accepted. Check the exact department page before preparing or sending a score.
Which English tests are accepted?
Acceptance of IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic and Duolingo English Test varies by institution, including minimum scores and exemptions. Verify each programme’s current policy.
How can MKS Education help select and prepare for these programmes?
MKS Education helps Nepali students compare curricula and prerequisites, shortlist realistic universities, prepare for GRE and accepted English tests and build consistent application evidence.
