Build a balanced university shortlist

Rankings alone do not establish academic fit, affordability or visa eligibility. Review the exact curriculum, entry prerequisites, faculty, facilities, location, international student services, graduation outcomes and full cost. Check accreditation through official US resources and confirm that the school is SEVP-certified if it will issue Form I-20 for an F-1 student.

  • Use the university’s own international admissions and department pages.
  • Confirm whether the application is institutional, Common App or another authorised platform.
  • Separate admission deadlines from scholarship, assistantship and priority deadlines.
  • Record whether documents must be uploaded, emailed or sent directly by the issuing institution.
  • Save a dated copy of the requirement page and confirm any unclear point in writing.

Prepare a complete first-year application

EducationUSA notes that undergraduate requirements vary greatly. Common elements can include secondary-school credentials, transcripts, English translations, test scores, recommendation letters and an essay or personal statement. Some institutions use the Common App while others use their own system.

  • Enter your name, date of birth and academic history exactly and consistently.
  • Report Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12 records as the portal instructs.
  • Arrange certified transcripts and English translations in the required format.
  • Invite recommenders early and choose people who know your academic work.
  • Write personal essays in your own voice and answer the university’s actual prompt.
  • Check whether an SAT score is required, optional, recommended or considered for scholarships.
Graduate and doctoral

Match the department’s academic and research expectations

Graduate requirements often sit on both the central graduate-school page and the department page. Master’s, MBA, PhD and professional doctorate applicants should compare both sources before preparing evidence.

  • Check degree prerequisites, minimum academic preparation and required modules.
  • Review whether the GRE, GMAT or another test is required, optional or not accepted.
  • Prepare a focused statement of purpose connected to the programme, not a generic life story.
  • For research degrees, review faculty fit, research areas, writing samples and proposal instructions.
  • Use a clear CV or résumé with one consistent education and employment chronology.
  • Verify assistantship and funding deadlines separately from admission deadlines.
Document control

Keep every record genuine and consistent

Never alter marks, formatting, dates or institutional records. Differences between an application, transcript, passport, CV and later visa forms can trigger questions or delays.

  • Do not assume part-time work will fund tuition or the complete living budget.
Final review

Audit the application before clicking submit

  1. Confirm the correct campus, programme, degree and intake.
  2. Compare every field with the passport and academic record.
  3. Check that all uploads are readable, complete and correctly oriented.
  4. Confirm recommendations and official score reports are progressing.
  5. Review the essay or SOP against the exact prompt and word limit.
  6. Pay only through the authorised university or application platform.
  7. Download the submission confirmation and store every receipt and email.
After submission

Respond carefully to decisions and Form I-20 steps

Monitor the official applicant portal and email, respond to genuine requests, and do not send duplicate documents unless instructed. If admitted, compare academic fit, conditions, scholarship terms and total cost before accepting. SEVP-certified schools issue Form I-20 to eligible admitted students; review all personal, programme and financial information on the form before using it in the student-visa process.

Is the SAT compulsory for undergraduate admission in the USA?
