Quick answer

GRE commonly serves a broad range of graduate and doctoral fields, while GMAT is designed for graduate management education. However, U.S. universities and programmes establish their own rules. Check whether each target programme requires, accepts, waives or ignores the test, then compare format, strengths, timing and funding value before choosing.

Important: “Test optional” is not the same as “test not considered”. A strong optional score may add evidence in some reviews, while another programme may not use it at all. Save the official policy for your entry year.

GRE or GMAT: start with the degree, not the exam

EducationUSA states that graduate programmes decide which standardized tests they accept. Build a list of actual programmes, then record their testing requirement, applicant exceptions, score deadline and funding policy. Do not prepare for months before checking whether the score is relevant.

ETS lists GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores from 130–170 and Analytical Writing from 0–6. GMAC lists the current GMAT total scale as 205–805. Never translate one score into the other using an unofficial chart unless the target school publishes how it evaluates both tests.

Preparation plan

A sensible GRE or GMAT timeline from Nepal

Week 1: verify programme policies and take an official-format diagnostic.
Weeks 2–5: repair concepts in Quant, Verbal, Data Insights or Writing as relevant.
Weeks 6–9: add timed sets, review logs and adaptive strategy.
Weeks 10–12: complete full mocks, decide readiness and protect application-writing time.
Before booking: confirm passport details, test-centre/home requirements, score dates and the earliest programme deadline.

Preparation length must follow the diagnostic gap, not a fixed promise. A strong score supports a strong application; it does not repair weak programme fit, incomplete prerequisites, generic statements or unrealistic funding.

English evidence

GRE or GMAT does not replace language proficiency

Most international applicants still need an accepted English-proficiency route unless they qualify for a published exemption.
