GRE vs GMAT for USA Graduate Study from Nepal 2026–2027
Choose the test that matches the target programme—not the test that is fashionable. This guide compares current GRE and GMAT formats, admission use and preparation decisions for Nepali applicants.
GRE commonly serves a broad range of graduate and doctoral fields, while GMAT is designed for graduate management education. However, U.S. universities and programmes establish their own rules. Check whether each target programme requires, accepts, waives or ignores the test, then compare format, strengths, timing and funding value before choosing.
GRE or GMAT: start with the degree, not the exam
EducationUSA states that graduate programmes decide which standardized tests they accept. Build a list of actual programmes, then record their testing requirement, applicant exceptions, score deadline and funding policy. Do not prepare for months before checking whether the score is relevant.
| Target | Test more commonly considered | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| MS, MA, engineering, science, social science | GRE in many programmes, but policies vary widely | Required, optional, waived or not accepted; department-specific expectations |
| MBA | GMAT or GRE at many schools | Whether both are accepted equally and whether scholarships use scores |
| Specialized business master’s | GMAT, GRE or neither depending on the programme | Preferred test, quantitative readiness and applicant-background rules |
| PhD or doctorate | Often GRE where a test is used | Department, faculty and funding expectations; subject-test rules if any |
A university-wide graduate page may not be the final authority. Check the department and exact programme page, because requirements can differ inside the same institution.
GRE and GMAT structure compared
| Feature | GRE General Test | GMAT Exam |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Graduate, business and selected law-school applications | Graduate management programmes |
| Current duration | About 1 hour 58 minutes | 2 hours 15 minutes, plus one optional 10-minute break |
| Sections | Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning | Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights |
| Questions / tasks | One 30-minute issue task; 27 Verbal and 27 Quant questions | 64 questions: 21 Quant, 23 Verbal and 20 Data Insights |
| Adaptation | Verbal and Quant are section-level adaptive | Computer-adaptive; section order can be selected |
| Review control | Move, mark, review and change answers within a section | Review after a section and edit up to three answers when time remains |
ETS lists GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores from 130–170 and Analytical Writing from 0–6. GMAC lists the current GMAT total scale as 205–805. Never translate one score into the other using an unofficial chart unless the target school publishes how it evaluates both tests.
Which test may suit your profile?
GRE may fit when
- You are applying across non-business and business graduate programmes.
- The target field commonly lists GRE as its admission test.
- You want Analytical Writing evidence and section-level navigation.
GMAT may fit when
- Your list is focused on MBA or business master’s programmes.
- Data Insights aligns with the programme and your strengths.
- A target school or scholarship specifically values GMAT evidence.
This is a shortlist tool, not a rule. Take an official-format diagnostic for each genuinely accepted test. Compare percentile context, preparation gap, available dates, official score-delivery timing and total cost before committing.
Build a programme-by-programme test sheet
| Column | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Policy | Required, optional, waiver, not accepted | Prevents preparing for an irrelevant test |
| Accepted exams | GRE, GMAT, either, subject test | Shows the valid decision set |
| Score deadline | Application date or separate received-by date | Controls test and score-send timing |
| Score context | Minimum, recent class profile or no published target | Helps judge whether a score adds value |
| Funding | Assistantship or scholarship consideration | An optional score may still matter for funding |
| Validity/reporting | Accepted test date and official reporting method | Avoids expired or late scores |

A sensible GRE or GMAT timeline from Nepal
- Week 1: verify programme policies and take an official-format diagnostic.
- Weeks 2–5: repair concepts in Quant, Verbal, Data Insights or Writing as relevant.
- Weeks 6–9: add timed sets, review logs and adaptive strategy.
- Weeks 10–12: complete full mocks, decide readiness and protect application-writing time.
- Before booking: confirm passport details, test-centre/home requirements, score dates and the earliest programme deadline.
Preparation length must follow the diagnostic gap, not a fixed promise. A strong score supports a strong application; it does not repair weak programme fit, incomplete prerequisites, generic statements or unrealistic funding.
GRE or GMAT does not replace language proficiency
Most international applicants still need an accepted English-proficiency route unless they qualify for a published exemption. IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Duolingo English Test policies vary by institution and programme. Compare them in our USA English-proficiency test guide. GRE and GMAT questions from Nepal
Is GRE or GMAT compulsory for every U.S. graduate programme?
No. Each university and programme sets its own policy. A score may be required, optional, waived for eligible applicants or not considered.
Which test is better for an MBA: GRE or GMAT?
Many business schools accept both, but the right choice depends on the target programme’s policy, your career direction and the test on which you can present the stronger relevant evidence.
Can I use the GRE for a U.S. MBA application?
Many MBA programmes accept GRE scores, but acceptance and score expectations are programme-specific. Verify every target school before booking.
Is the GMAT useful outside an MBA?
GMAT is designed for graduate management education and may be accepted for MBA and selected business master’s programmes. It is not a universal test for non-business graduate study.
When should a Nepali student take GRE or GMAT?
Work backward from the earliest admission or funding deadline and leave time for official results, score delivery and a responsible retake.
Does MKS Education offer GRE and GMAT preparation?
Yes. MKS Education provides structured GRE and GMAT preparation in Nepal with separate practice web apps, alongside English-proficiency preparation.
