How to verify a USA university English requirement

1. Open the official international admissions page for the exact degree level.
2. Check the department or programme page for a stricter rule.
3. Confirm the test name and version: test-centre, home or online delivery may be treated differently.
4. Record overall and section or subscore minimums.
5. Check exemptions based on prior education, country, medium or other published criteria.
6. Check score validity and whether the result must arrive before the application or enrolment stage.
7. Use the official score-reporting method; a PDF upload may not be sufficient.

If the public pages conflict, ask the university through an official email or portal and save the written response with your application records.

Which test experience may suit you?

Preference is not enough. Take official-format diagnostics and compare performance. A candidate who dislikes face-to-face speaking may prefer computer delivery, while another may communicate more naturally with an examiner. Choose evidence, not hearsay.

Understand the TOEFL iBT 2026 update

Older articles often describe a roughly two-hour TOEFL iBT and only a 0–120 total. ETS’s 2026 blueprint describes an adaptive Reading and Listening design, linear Writing and Speaking, and a total estimated time of approximately 1 hour 23 to 1 hour 29. ETS also explains that score reports use the new 1–6 scale while including a comparable 0–120 total estimate during institutional transition.

Do not manually convert a score or assume an older university page is invalid. ETS states that institutions are updating at different times; submit the official report and compare the included estimate where a university still displays 0–120.

English proficiency is not SAT, GRE or GMAT

SAT supports undergraduate academic evaluation where used. GRE and GMAT support selected graduate or business admission decisions. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo measure English proficiency.
