A practical guide for Nepali students learning how U.S. universities define original work, source use, collaboration and responsible generative-AI use.
The safest rule is to follow the most specific written instruction
Read the university code, school or programme policy, course syllabus and assignment instructions. The assignment-level rule may be more restrictive than a general university statement. If permission for collaboration, translation, editing software, code reuse or generative AI is unclear, ask the instructor before submitting.
You remain responsible for the facts, citations, calculations, code, analysis and authorship of submitted work. An AI tool, friend, tutor or paid service cannot take responsibility for you. Keep notes, drafts, source records and version history so your process is transparent.

University of Michigan’s course-policy resource emphasises responsibility for content, source attribution and transparency while showing that instructors may adopt different AI rules. That is why a general “AI is allowed” assumption is unsafe.
Read from institution to assignment
- University student-conduct or integrity code.
- College, graduate-school or professional-school policy.
- Department or programme rules.
- Course syllabus and learning platform notices.
- Exact assignment, exam or laboratory instructions.
- Written clarification from the instructor.
Save the version of the rule that applied when you completed the work. A policy can change, and different courses in the same university can set different permitted uses.
Use sources to support—not replace—your thinking
Record author, title, publication, URL or DOI, date and relevant page while researching. A paraphrase must genuinely restate the idea in your own structure and language and still cite the source. Quotation marks and a citation are needed for exact words according to the required style. Copying and then changing a few synonyms is not a reliable paraphrase.
Citation styles differ by subject and instructor. Use the library or course guide specified for the assignment. Never add a source you did not read, invent a DOI or accept an AI-generated citation without opening and verifying the original.
Treat generative AI as permission-sensitive and error-prone
Michigan’s appropriate-use guidance calls for honesty, disclosure and citation where AI is used. Its graduate-admissions guidance also warns applicants not to represent AI-generated ideas or work as their own. These are institution-specific examples, not a universal U.S. rule.
If AI is allowed, document the tool, purpose, prompts, relevant output, edits and verification when instructed. Check every fact, calculation, quotation, citation and code dependency. Do not upload confidential, personal, research-participant, patient, employer or restricted course data unless the institution explicitly authorises the tool and use.
Define boundaries before working with others
Permitted collaboration may include discussing concepts, peer review or shared data while still requiring individual analysis and writing. Another assignment may prohibit all communication. Ask what can be shared, whether code or notes may be viewed and how collaboration must be acknowledged.
Tutors and test-preparation teachers should explain concepts, diagnose gaps and provide practice; they should not complete graded work or fabricate an application voice. Keep an authorship and research trail
Retain outlines, dated drafts, reading notes, calculation sheets, datasets, code commits, experiment records, feedback and revision history. This evidence improves learning and helps explain how the work developed. Do not manufacture a history after a question is raised.

For uncertainty, ask the instructor a specific written question before the deadline and keep the response. If an allegation occurs, read the notice, preserve relevant records, respond truthfully and follow the institution’s stated meeting, advice and appeal process. Do not delete drafts or create evidence.
